So us nerd know that Marvel's The Iron Fist has dropped on Netflix as of Friday.
Ive been semi- binge watching it (watching it in 4-5 episode bursts, i think im on episode 9?) and while I haven't finished the series I have a peeve turned rant to share. In many parts.
1) What is this an alternate timeline or something???
So the Netflix series is suppose to focus on the dark kind of cliche heroes and villains that live in New York and inexplicable only in New York in the Marvel comics. Also they start with Daredevil season 1 after the 'incident' about a year after the Avenagers. If this is all true then WHY DO THEY NEVER MENTION ANYTHING ELSE IN THE MARVEL VERSE!! I mean yeah they can just be reference every episode, but even Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. make sure to comment on the changes in the world as they relate to the movies. Why has no government person talked to Luke Cage about his abilities? Why do they not mention the Inhumans? Why are there no Inhumans? Honestly there should do little things like news reports in the background like they do in Arrow and the Flash.
2) Spoiler: The Iron Fist deals with The Hand as the big bad.
Thats right, the big bad in Daredevil season 2 is the big bad in The Iron Fist. Now I understand the story for Daredevil was focused more on Matt losing his connection to life outside his persona and losing his purpose and reason to fight and ends with him a being a beaten and destroyed man needing redemption.... but still this is important to remember. Claire, Daredevils ex number 2 and Luke Cages current bae, knows about The Hand. She knows how The Hand fights and their m.o.. She also knows the only person she has seen being able to fight The Hand is Daredevil. So The Iron Fist shows up, tells her that The Hand is still around being all evil, and what does she do? NOT CALL MATT AND TELL HIM THAT THE EVIL ORGANIZATION THAT KILLED ELECTRA AND ALMOST DESTROYED HIM IS STILL AROUND!!! I understand her wanting to help, but it seems really out of character to not have her at least make one phone call.
3) So only the Kingpin, the Hand and generic gangsters?
Ok, Marvel is known for their interesting and complex heroes and kind of boring sucky villains. Now this means I don't expect much from the villains in these shows. The fact the made the Kingpin interesting and Killgray was uber memorable, and scary af, is amazing. But can't they come up with something more interesting than reusing the same villains over and over gain. Daredevil was the story of a man turning his disability into his greatest power and saving others, Jessica Jones was about a woman dealing with her PTSD and facing her rapest and taking him down, and Luke Cage is about a man turning the stereotype of the 'Black man in a hoodie' into a symbol of power and unity instead of fear and division. So far the Iron Fist has been... a rich kid decides to come home instead of doing what the people who raised him wanted him to do and finding the ancient baddies from fairytales there and trying to fight them. Granted im enjoying the characters but the story is.... kind of boring. Maybe the last few episode will improve it like how in Luke Cage it started out kind of raciest but then showed that it was using the stereotypes about the African-American people to turn them around and make a more in-depth story but you really didn't start to see that until episode 6. Hell as a mostly white girl I was a little uncomfortable the first 5 episodes until i started seeing the 'turned on its ear' stuff.
Ok thats the rant for now.
