  • ...and the great circle of crap continues!

I found out last night that my mom just can't seem to catch a break. Not only is my dad still trying to take her to the cleaners, but so are the Feds! That is, she had her taxes done, and it's going to put a huge dent in her finances for a bit. Due to an adjustment in her social security payments, she owes nearly $3K in taxes

I already knew that she was going to owe a bit. I am an accountant, so I offered to do her taxes for her. Since I was already doing my brothers' taxes, why not? But, as I was a tad nervous about her situation, I did the preliminary work...and then told her to call her accountant (same guy who is keeping an eye on the bullshit with my dad), and he came up with the same number I did.

What sucks, is that my mom is doing what she's supposed to. She's following the rules, and get fucked over. Meanwhile, my dad is living with his girlfriend, and doesn't have a care in the world. However, because he's dragged this out for so long (he still hasn't filled out the paperwork), it's probably going to head to court. All of his nasty little secrets will come out sooner or later.

Nothing I haven't been seeing this season. It is a very common misconception that social security isn't taxable:
    WRONG!!!!
As a matter of fact, depending on the amount and type of one's other income, as much as 85% of a social security payment can be taxable.
More information here. Going forward, I strongly recommend some withholding.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Yeah me and now Ex found that out back in 1998 when she got SS disability AND I had a full time white color job. Sucks paying taxes on SS benefits.

Now with her just being by herself it seems does not have to file anymore (or so I was told by an accountant friend years ago).

Thanks, I appreciate that. I just feel so helpless right now. I can't help her out more than I have...and I can't head up north and smack someone around with a crowbar. Well, I could, but he'd probably retaliate, and I don't look good in orange

But seriously, my brothers and I have given her some financial assistance, and the rest she'll have to put on credit cards for now. She'll have to make payments until she's finally free of "He who must not be named" at which point she'll consolidate everything at a lower rate. While we were talking, I got her to fill out the forms to withhold any future taxes from her SS payments, so she shouldn't get screwed next year.

I'm in Oz, so not 100% sure how the IRS works. But do they do payment plans on tax that you owe them?

Here we have several months to pay, but if it's a lot you can contact the ATO and arrange a payment plan. Basically you say 'can't pay it all off at once, but can I pay $..... a week/fortnight/month?' As long as you keep paying, they don't charge any/much interest on the debt. Small amount = no interest. Large amount = interest.

If this is possible, it would be a lot better than having more owing on credit cards.

From what I've read, the IRS would do a payment plan. But, the information on their website is confusing as hell to read. Plus, with the tax deadline coming up, she just wants it to be over. The IRS isn't exactly known for being user friendly or tolerant of problems. There's a reason why Americans joke that the agency can get blood from a rock--they'll get their money one way or another

But seriously, I have the forms so she can call her accountant, and get this sorted. Hopefully, we won't have to deal with it next year...and I'll be able to get her taxes done. The reason I didn't this time, is that I wanted to make damn sure I didn't screw anything up--her situation doesn't quite fit into what I was taught...or even the H&R Block program I was using. So next year, I hope to do them, and get a home-cooked dinner as payment

There are only 2 good things to come out of my dad's departure. First one, is that my brothers and I have become closer. The second...is that our father is now the punchline for anything that breaks, or gets fucked up. For example, the stairway railing fell off the wall. Guess whose fault it was?

I get to call my mom's tax prep her Mothers' Day gift---the normal fee at my mega tax chain for this would be more than I would likely spend

I found out last night that my mom's attorney has served his attorney with papers. Mostly because he's let this crap drag on for so long, but also because he's over the 2-year limit. He still hasn't filled out the last pile of crap--because he doesn't want to reveal the address of where he's been staying. Why? Because he's afraid that we'll know where he is. Never mind that he's registered to vote at his girlfriend's place...and we already know that he's living there. We know it's bullshit, and we're tired of it. From what I was told, he has a few more days to fill out everything and get it to his lawyer...or be charged with contempt of court. Hopefully, that will bring this to an end, and we can all get on with our lives.

Thanks all. I appreciate the support. Most of the reason he doesn't want his address public, is that he'd then have to admit--under oath--that he's still married, yet living with another woman. Big problem, because my mom could legally go after his girlfriend for fucking up her marriage. The other reason, is that he doesn't think that we're smart enough to find him. In fact, he nearly shit his pants when my brother showed up there unannounced one weekend to drop some stuff off.

Last Tuesday, my mom's attorney said that he only has a few more days to comply. If he doesn't fill out the paperwork, things don't look good for him. Granted, he doesn't give a crap, but being hauled into court over a contempt charge might give him the boot to the nuts he needs.
