  • Bit of good news...?

(BG: We decided to apply for affordable housing in town as while we love the building we're in, our rent is getting ridiculous)

We finally heard back from the housing authority; there's an apartment available for August 1st. No word whether it's a 1- or 2-bedroom, for some reason we were discouraged from applying as a family and had to fill out separate applications. I didn't get the message until after business hours (I don't know why mom didn't put her cell for a contact) so we'll return the call tomorrow morning.

So...yay? Timing kinda sucks as the summer is nuts for both of us so moving would be a huge undertaking and I don't think we have the money; it would be difficult for both of us to get the time off (we need to work to pay for the move). We re-upped our lease in April so are also looking at a penalty.

I'd also have to give up on my horticulture experiment just when it's getting promising...

Or not. We should have figured something was up when the person calling never said which one of us she was calling for (it's impossible to miss that both of us are at the same phone number). The apartment turned out to be a one-bedroom, for me. The big problem is currently both of our incomes are necessary to cover the rent and I definitely would not be able to handle both my half of this place plus a place on my own. Mom's income alone isn't near enough to cover things, and I can't be expected to pay for two apartments.

Somewhere in the morass of paper we filled out over the years, it was completely missed that we're a family (she's over 65 and I'm technically disabled, both of which put us at the top of the list but if she applied as head of household and listed me as her daughter... ).

Well, at least something happened and we're still on the list. A friend who works at the housing department suggested that mom put this whole saga in an email--emphasizing the fact that we are in fact a family unit and must stay together--so it's in the actual file.

Bureaucracy seriously sucks. I just finished a brief run-in over unemployment benefits, which appears to have ended well (I'll know for sure when I get my first payment) but for a while there I thought it was a lost cause.

I hope you have gotten the mess straightened out and you can find an apartment suitable for both of you ... fairly soon.
