  • "Chick Flick" vs "Date Movie"

The wife and I were discussing this the other day.

We were trying to determine criteria for a "date movie", because we were curious.

We both had trouble actually defining criteria for a "date movie", though we thought it was much easier to define "chick flick".

So, what's your opinion on this?

My first date with my husband, we went to see Godzilla 2000.

So maybe my idea of a 'date movie' is skewed.

I think 'date movie' just means a movie most people can agree to watch. Something entertaining that will appeal to people with different tastes, so you can both enjoy it. Like a superhero movie or a silly comedy.

I don't know much about women, but you seem a bit atypical for a woman. My wife is the same way. She doesn't really like a lot of "girly" stuff and would rather hang out with "the guys".

Anyway, in the course of our discussion, she did mention that she thought Titanic might be a date movie...

We also were unsure as to whether or not a "Rom-Com" was a "date movie" or not. She's not big into superheroes.

The closest conclusion we could come to is that a date movie was basically a movie with a love interest or love angle, but with stuff in it "for guys", but not something like Field of Dreams.

Though we agreed Forrest Gump wasn't a date movie.

The first movie I took my wife to was a showing of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', so I guess it just depends on the couple.

Thinking back, the first 'Date' Movie that we ended up seeing together I think was something called 'Mr Wrong'. It was so horrendous bad it became our benchmark for bad movies..

"Chick Flick" generically refers to (bad) movies that ONLY appeal to women, and that men will find extremely boring to sit through. Personally, I can enjoy a good, well-written romance or romcom, but have little patience for such movies that are clearly pandering to their fanbase. Same thing with exceptionally dumb action, sci-fi or horror movies, genres that are usually aimed strictly at "Guy Movie" audiences. I love me a good action movie, but there is a difference between an artful, well-made movie like Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Die Hard or Baby Driver and a piece of stereotypical shit like Transformers, The Mummy or Resident Evil.
