  • Maybe we should have left the trees ...

Brother and I decided that some trees in the back yard should come down, as they were growing into overhead wires (I don't know what kind ... electrical? Cable? Your guess is as good as mine.)

    So the trees are gone.

Then today I walked into the backyard ... and realized the wires in question are now lying flat on the ground. No idea when this happened.

They are not sparking, just lying quietly there minding their own business ...

Give the power company a call and (of course) stay the hell away from them; don't even try to move them. The lines could still be carrying power (even cable TV lines work on electricity, no? ), so they'll be the best bet on how to deal with the things.

May wanna give whoever took the trees down a call, too, to ask what happened/if they knew about any lines falling down.

I managed to find the right number to call and Hydro Guy showed up ... picked up the wires in his bare hands and tossed them into my tomato plants. He pointed to a different set of wires and said "I'm over there!" So if THOSE wires ever go down ...

They are indeed cable lines for the house, but I don't own a TV and cancelled the cable nearly five years ago when I moved in, so they are either dead or comatose, depending on how you want to look at it.

What happened is that the gizmo that attached them to the brick wall let go. The guy who took down the trees has offered to re-attach them. I'd be happy to call Ma Bell and tell them to come get their wires off my tomato plants and off my property.

I wondered about the house's next owners, but brother says hardly anybody uses cable anymore.

Eh, a lot of people still have cable... but I imagine Bell could fix that fairly easily.

Eh, they'll never collect them. Too weather-worn to be worth anything apart from scrap. Heck, We phoned out cable company to get the cable they left and they never did, and THIS amount is a not-insubstantial amount still in it's box!

Well, Lawn Guy has said he will re-attach them to the house, but ... if it weren't for that, and if Bell won't collect them, who would? You (generic "you") can't just leave them lying across the back yard lawn ...

If they're safe to touch (as they seem to be), I'd just roll them up all the way back to the closest pole and leave them as is. Next guy to order cable will likely need a new line run anyway (especially if your neighbourhood gets Fibre instead of Cable for example), so it's that much less clutter on your house.
