  • 'Night Costello...Night Morton?'

This puzzled me,so I'm turning to the great minds here.

Whilst reading some cheapy teen kids book*,two of the characters are getting ready for bed and say:

    'Night,Costello...'
    'Night,Morton...'

It's not their names,or nicknames or anything like that.It looks like it's supposed to be some sort of catchphrase or in-joke that should be picked up on,but I'm danged if I can find any trace of where it comes from...
    Any ideas at all?

On the TV show "The Waltons", the episodes often ended with everyone saying good night to each other.

If the string ended with "Good night, John-Boy", it is definitely a Waltons reference.

I believe that show was on in the 1970s in the US.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged.
One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world.
The other, of course, involves orcs." -- John Rogers

My first thought as well. There were 8 kids (IIRC) and at least two or three adults (Mom, Dad, Grandpa, maybe Grandma too, I dunno), so I swear the wrap-up scene took at least five minutes by the time everybody finished saying "Goodnight" to each other. It did turn into a running joke eventually.

Gonna go out on a limb and guess references to Abbott & Costello and Morton & Hayes. M&H styled their routines after A&C.
