    I got a cat ...

    ... looking at a one-way trip to the local Humane Society.

    I have two HUGE litterboxes, both full of litter.

    I just caught him, again, peeing on the floor.

    The litterbox he was peeing in front of was not 100% clean, but it was 98% clean.

    I'm going to make an appointment with the vet, to check for physical problems.

    But this has got to stop.

    I would like to disavow the original post; I had just finished cleaning up yet another puddle and was pissed off.

    I'm starting to think it might be the onset of dementia and the feline equivalent of 'sundowner' syndrome; he only seems to do this at dusk. I get up in the morning and there are no pee puddles, nor are there any when I come home from work.

    Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to the vet we goooo ....

          Thanks, Kittish, we will have to see. It does seem to have stopped, so ...

          But he still seems to be drinking a LOT.

            Please do get him to a vet as soon as you can. UTIs can be extremely painful for cats (and if it hurt like hell every time you went to the toilet, how long would it take you to start refusing to go anywhere near it?), and they're damned good at hiding it. Plus, there's the chance that he's got crystals forming in his urine which is again painful and potentially life threatening. It's also generally pretty easily treatable.

              Now you mention it, I've had male cats with crystals before ... another reason any future cats are gonna be females, LOL.

              And it hasn't stopped. I came upstairs from doing the laundry and found him directly in FRONT of one of the litterboxes ... peeing.

              He goes in on Saturday, early afternoon. Meanwhile, I might put some newspapers out in front of the litterboxes, just to make cleanup a bit easier.

              At least he's not peeing near the litterboxes, and not indiscriminately all over the place.

                Maybe consider some puppy training pads for the moment, until you can get kitty checked out properly. More absorbent than newspaper -- think of them as flat diapers

                  Another possibility is diabetes. Our black lab had it, and before she was diagnosed she drank massively and kept weeing everywhere, even when the back door was open.

                  I second getting the cat to a vet a.s.a.p. as our Bonnie went blind before we could get her on insulin (our vet was useless). She lived another 5 years blind as a bat, unable to avoid weeing in the middle of the night (we bought a carpet cleaner and put sheets down so we'd know where to clean) but otherwise perfectly content.

                    You got it, greek_jester ... kitty has diabetes.

                    So now there's two of us in the apartment with it.

                    And no, he can't share my metformin.

                    He'll be on insulin for the rest of his little life. I'm going in to the vet tomorrow to get some instructions and the meds and equipment.

                    Kitty is gonna have to get a paper route to help pay for all this ...

                          Well, at least you know, and it's something that can be handled. That's always the big worry with pets; since they can't flat-out tell you what's wrong, diagnosing them can be a nightmare.

                          You'll get used to it, don't worry. At least you know the signs to look out for now. I'm fairly sure that some of us actually washed the carpet when we were sleepwalking for Bonnie!

                            You'll get used to it. I did, and I hate needles.

                            I had to put an IV of saline into our car many times. I hated doing it, but Mrs IA refused.

                            Later I had to give our dog allergy shots. Got used to it but never liked doing it.

                            Then for a short time I had to give myself insulin shots. Fortunately I got to go back on the pills.
