  • I just want to share something really cool about my new little town.

I moved a couple of highway exits south and now I am a 2-minute drive from the lake which is a privilege. I have started walking there because I like the old mansions that face the lake and the lighted bridge that goes over the lake to the hospital. Below are some pictures of some of the houses. And here is a short video about how the hospital got started:

I think if you ask most women what they think are the prominent risks to having a baby, there is one that never seems to come up but in Theda's day, it was a forefront concern. That's profound to me.

You can't tell from the pictures, but these houses are monstrous and imposing, some with three stories. I couldn't find a picture of the one that has an actual tower with a spiral staircase and murals on the ceilings you can see from the street. You feel like a tiny ant when you walk past. They feel like 1/3 the size of Downton Abbey to me, which is still very large.

I couldn't find a picture of the bridge anywhere so maybe I'll take one and post it. It's gorgeous at night and you can see our downtown behind it.

There are some great things about the bigger cities in this country, but sometimes the small towns hold wonderful stories and sights.

there Are enough houses like that in my town (you know where) the downside is A LOT of them were chunked into 4 to 6 apts by slumlords. beautiful old wood fixtures with layers of paint. drywall clearly dividing up stuff, kitchens and baths everywhere. outside stairs to the 2d floor that I have a feeling is NOT up to code. oddly placed original stairs inside again painted with crappy carpet

    it is a shame

That is sad. These I don't think are subdivided. I've been around back on the street behind them and they have garages at the back end of the properties where I might see one car at a time.

I like the 2nd and 5th houses the best.

Of course, I'm also a sucker for these three:

I'm kind of convinced the 2nd is haunted but that's because no one lives there. If I remember correctly, Kimberly-Clark, the Huggies company, owns it. I've no idea what they need with a house...

Omg, I'm laughing at the name, Balmoral. Pretty pretentious, naming it after the Queen's retreat. But it is a gorgeous mansion/castle.
