  • Why I'm an Amazon fan...

    I'm a dolt.

Amazon makes it easier to deal with a company that sends you a shoddy product.

I got confused and ordered something off another website because it was a replacement for something I'd gotten 7 years ago and the manufacturer names are very similar. The product is really sub-par so I decided to return it after I realized what company I actually needed to order from (which can be bought via catalog if you pay for shipping or free shipping and returns with Prime). I had to wait 2 days for return approval.

I looked up post offices and the one on Franklin St. in the next town closed at 1:30. I wouldn't make it; it was a 20 minute drive. (My town is small enough that it's common practice to do business up there--same stores but better selection, better hours. Our Aldi here doesn't even sell wine and all the ones up there do.) Well, I could go to the postal annex in the gas station in my town 2 minutes from me, since it closed at 3:00. The young man at the counter couldn't get the label I'd printed to scan but figured out the postage, though he couldn't get it to print a label at all. Maybe he was new; idk.

So I was off to drive the 20 minutes since I want this done now. I looked again to confirm before I left and it said the post office on Franklin closed at 3:00, not 1:30. Huh; I couldn't figure why I'd seen 1:30 but OK. My route ran through our downtown and on a hunch, I detoured to our main P.O. Maybe it was open today, though I didn't remember seeing that online. And here's the kicker: the 1:30 time was for ours and it, too, is on Franklin St. So THAT'S why I saw two times. Well, fortunately even though it was technically closed, I could get in the lobby to do the kiosk thing so I got the package off in the mail.

Yes, most of this is due to my misunderstanding, but it still would've been easier to drop the items off at the local Kohl's and had them be returned without a shipping charge, had they been ordered via Prime. It's worth the Prime membership to me to have the points and shipping ease. Because I'm dumb sometimes.

That is confusing. I would think Post Offices would be more uniform.

Also, someone tried to burn down the PO by my house. I live in Houston, so there are tons of PO in town, so I'm not screwed. The story of the PO was on the news and on Nextdoor and as usual postings in Nextdoor ends up with people accusing other people being racist/sexest/misogynist/etc. Best I underdstand a homeless person or a person with schizophrenia (or both) tried to burn it down but only burned down the lobby. The Fire station is right across the street from the PO, so don't know if the Fire Station not notice the buildinig was on fire until someone called it in or the arsonist used something that made that building catch on fire really quickly.

But it was a sucky PO anyway. For Christmas I went there to mail a Secret Santa present, and the line was at least 30 people, no social distancing, confusing where the line ended. I looked up the next nearest PO, which was 5 miles away, and the line was shorter, there was social distancing, there was a PO worker letting in only so many people at a time, people had masks. Also, in the burned down PO the drive-up mail box was always having mailed stolen from it (like it would get full, and it was easy to pull other people's mail from the slot).

The Kohls by my house has a fast Amazon counter, at least the times I had to use it, though a lot of assaults and robberies happen there and the Walmart next door.
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

    I wish porn had subtitles.

Side note on 'Zon Prime: For anyone here on Medicaid, Disability, or the like, you can get Prime for half price. Students, too, I believe. This includes all of the same benefits, including access to monthly free PC games and mobile game goodie packs, Prime video, yada yada yada.

Eric, do you know if it's for people on social security as well, fixed income and all that? My mom has Prime and is paying full price for it.

depechemodefan, I don't think you're in Florida but it feels like that P.O. is. But then, if it were, it would've been mowed down by a car instead. https://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sidesho...213551323.html

I believe she should. If she qualifies for Medicaid and/or SNAP and/or most other forms of government assistance (should be able to get the free government cellphone if she's on either of those), she should be able to get half-price Prime.

          Info page here:

Note -- Apparently, it's good for up to four years. Even folks who qualify for reduced-price or free school lunches are on the list. I know it may not sound like a lot, but that's something like $70 a year. Being able to order (non-perishable) groceries last year with free shipping was really, really useful.

We have friends in HI who have told us that Prime's free shipping is a total life-saver out there. Shipping costs are exceedingly high for anything that isn't standard USPS, and having free fairly-rapid shipping (I don't think it's two-day shipping out there) is very much worth the membership cost.
