    Whilst tackling one of the American crosswords (and let alone why you jam your words together,allow initials and abbreviations and don't have any spare squares...) this one completely baffled me

    Clue: Feeling sorry for Minnesota? Answer: OPE. All the clues going the other way are right so it must be that but as to why or wherefore?

    It's apparently a polite expression of contrition. Good Sir Google tells me that's it's similar to "Oops!"
