Movies with scenes/elements that aren't really relevant...

Ever watch a movie where certain events happen, and they're not really relevant to the overall plot of the movie? Take for instance "The Last Jedi". Spoilers below:

In "The Last Jedi, the "side quest" (as I call it) with Finn and Rose trying to get the to disable the First Order's tracking device ended up having ZERO effect on end result of the movie. They separate from the group, go to that casino in Canto Bright, get re-captured, and end up back where they were. The side quest did absolutely nothing. Especially since, if I recall correctly, they didn't actually achieve their goal.

Watched the 2017 movie "The Snowman". Movie is a mess.

Part of the story is that the detective's female partner is the daughter of a cop who killed himself after failing to stop a prostitution ring run by a big businessman, and she's convinced that the businessman is behind the Snowman killings.

He isn't. The real killer is has zero connection to any of this part of the story.

Now, apparently the behind-the-scenes situation while making the movie would generously be called "chaotic", so maybe there's a thing that connects all the dots or something.
