  • NAR question...

How many NAR stories do you think are made up (or embellished), and how many do you think actually happened?

I worked in food service years ago, and I know many of you work in retail and other service industries. We've seen some weird stuff with customers. So I'm just wondering how many stories you think are real and how many are made up (or embellished).

About the same as a site like reddit. I assume that 10% are entirely true, at least a third are complete fabrications, and the rest are at least embellished.
"For a musician, the SNES sound engine is like using Crayola Crayons. Nobuo Uematsu used Crayola Crayons to paint the Sistine Chapel." - Jeremy Jahns (re: "Dancing Mad")
"The difference between an amateur and a master is that the master has failed way more times." - JoCat
"Thinking is difficult, therefore let the herd pronounce judgment!" ~ Carl Jung
"There's burning bridges, and then there's the lake just to fill it with gasoline." - Wiccy, reddit
"Retail is a cruel master, and could very well be the most educational time of many people's lives, in its own twisted way." - me
"Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down...tell you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens...makes her a home." - Capt. Malcolm Reynolds, "Serenity" (2005)

You left out the percentage that are repeats.

That sounds fair. And even some of the "reasonably likely to be true" stories are spoiled by the "And then everybody clapped" at the end. I wonder how often it was the OP who wrote that in, and how often it was the NAR editor(s) who tacked it on.

I treat the NAR stories the same as I do reddit stories. They are just something to laugh at and don't put too much faith into them.

Did you happen to notice that most of their stories are coming from reddit?

NAR stories are like the "based on actual events" movies: there's some truth to them, but most of it is made-up for extra drama. Course, sometimes the truth is also stranger than fiction -- I've got a few stories I'd share, but those sound like it was pulled out of the Twilight Zone.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

I know one of those stories from a few years ago is absolutely true.

                  Because I submitted it.

One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world.

Now I gotta know! Which one?

I don't get the "...and then everybody clapped!" stories, either.

I mean, they say that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, so even though I'd think a decent number of the stories are fictional, we've all had that one story or that one interaction where we're like, "Nobody's gonna believe this happened."

I remember a Pewl Horvey "Rest of the Story" that happened in my area. Nothing like what he told. As we say around here, Paul H. Dunn honesty.

I don't have a link off hand, but it was a "Working" one where Mickey D's drive-through was completely unable to make coffee (for me and a friend) after making me wait 15 minutes and be late for a meeting that said friend was having. My throw-away joke at the end was "luckily, we are still friends" and it got way more attention in the comments than the rest of the story.

I don't get the "...and then everybody clapped!" stories, either.
I keep wanting to write up something like that which ends by going from everyone chanting my name, to someone saying "Hey [name], wake up!" And then me opening my eyes to find that everyone who had witnessed my lame triumph had wandered off and was ignoring me, and I was standing in someone's way...

Here's a fun thing to consider- the more outlandish the story, the more wildly unbelievable it is on the surface.... the more likely it is to be absolutely true
