  • Need help with a gift request -- book titles!

We often exchange "wish lists" at Christmas because we are not exactly what you'd call a close family. And have little to no clue with the others have been up to over the passing year.

This year one of my SIL's request was, and I quote, "For me I love a new mindless book at Christmas! One where no one dies but not like a romance novel, LOL!"

    Any suggestions??

Is she a fan of sci-fi, silliness, dry British humour, or, better yet, all of the above? How about The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, then?

"Dungeon Crawler Carl" by Matt Dinniman is a quick, fun read, but it does have people dying.

Ditto "All Systems Red" by Martha Wells. But I do love me them Murderbot Diaries!
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged.
One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world.
The other, of course, involves orcs." -- John Rogers

May I offer Jodi Taylor's St.Mary's Chronicles- 'disaster magnets flying around history. They go to observe and record historical events in contemporary settings (don't call it time travel or you'll have to deal with Dr. Bairstow). If they get home intact and without having created mayhem wherever they go, then it's a success... '

Or I could REALLY "make" her Christmas by giving her the doorstop novel "Cities in Flight" by James Blish ... which ends with the destruction of the current universe.

(I think it was published as a series but I got the whole thing in one book; hence my calling it a "doorstop".)
