for those who survived the 90's

Marilyn Manson, Alice Cooper, Manic Street Preachers, Black Sabbath and Kiss mostly. Oh yeah, and Kula Shaker. ^^ There were other bands I kept getting into, but my music taste was receeding years wise, as in going backwards as I found that most new acts were a pile of dirty pants compared to the bands of the 70s and 80s.

I just saw Papa Roach last Friday night in Chicago. What do you mean "was"? They still rock it out!


As far as bands from the 90's, I have to go with Pearl Jam, U2 (Although the last really good album, as far as I'm concerned was "Joshua Tree"), Violent Femmes, Juliana Hatfield, Alice in Chains, Bloodhound Gang, Offspring, Collective Soul and Blind Melon. At least that's what I was listening to.

Nirvana was the biggest band....for about a YEAR in the Nineties. That's it. Your little teenage friend has his head so far up his ass he can do a self-colonoscopy.

Some bands *I*and or/my friends rocked to in the Nineties (that were part of the mainstream, not music from other generations I just rocked to) were Heart (yes, Heart, my favorite band, huge comeback in the late Eighties/early Nineties, thank you very much), Guns n' freakin' Roses, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Cinderella (whoever said they were done by the middle of the decade, fine, but that doesn't mean they weren't significant for the Nineties), Live, The Cult, AC/DC (remember Razor's Edge and the songs from that album?), the Offspring, Candlebox, Alanis Morissette (where would Avril Lavigne be if there had been no Alanis?), 10,000 Maniacs/Natalie Merchant, Van Halen (or Van Hagar, if you will), Concrete Blonde, Four Non Blondes, Living Color, etc.

Some bands that I was either minorly into or not at all into that still were pretty significant in the decade were the Gin Blossoms, Red Hot Chili Peppers (can't talk about the Nineties without talking about them, folks!), Alice in Chains, Godsmack, Social Distortion, Metallica, Prince, Garth Brooks (hated him, but he was HUGE in the Nineties!), Sinead O'Connor (despised her!), Megadeath, Pantera, Depeche Mode, the Cure, the Smiths, Dramarama, Dream Theater, Stone Temple Pilots, again etc.

I wasn't really into their stuff, but U2 was certainly very significant in the Nineties.

Sure, not all of this is hard rockin' head bashing music, but if we are talking about the significant music of the Nineties, this all enters the discussion.

While Nirvana was definitely one of the bigger bands, one cannot dismiss U2, Metallica, or GnR as huge acts in that decade.

Nirvana? My ass.

I have to say that partly because of this thread I have rediscovered the brilliance that is Guns n' Roses, and went online today and ordered CDs of "Appetite for Destruction" and "Use Your Illusion" I and II. Yes, I have the albums (either here or back in Phoenix in storage), but they are on cassette.

I may even invest in their newest album, "Chinese Democracy," the two tracks of which I've heard are pretty damn good.

First, Nirvana is overrated. They're okay but they get way too much credit.

As for other stuff:

Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beck, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Oasis, and Ben Folds Five (I remember them being big).

Those were the stuff I heard a lot growing up in the 90s.

I should add that there was some good sports viewing in the 90s. Michael Jordan for one.

And you are entitled to that opinion, but good music is good music. Van Hagar, as many people called the Van Halen lineup with Sammy Hagar, put out good music. From what I have heard (two tracks) from the current GnR album, they are also putting out good music.

Many people thought that once Bon Scott died, AC/DC was done....but they came back bigger, badder, and better than ever. Their most successful (and arguably best) album they ever put out was "Back in Black." Not all bands keep their original, or even most successful, lineup.

It is what it is.

That being said, I understand band loyalty. I do. But I am a fan of good music, and as Slash has never shown me any loyalty, I don't know why I should be expected to do the same for him. Nothing personal, you understand, but I have no compunction about checking out a Slash-less GnR. I also have no problem checking out Velvet Revolver, Slash's post-GnR band. I have heard they, also, put out good music.

On a slightly different note, certain albums are without question the height of a band's career, and no incarnation of that band, original or later, will usually be able to top that. There will never again be a GnR, no matter what the incarnation, that can put out an album as good or better than "Appetite for Destruction." Just as there will never be a band that will be able to do better than "Back in Black," "Nevermind," "Rumours," or "Hotel California." These were their respective band's zenith, the moment in their careers when the clouds parted and the music gods smiled down upon them with brilliance, talent, timing, and a little bit of luck.

Well I was a kid throughout the 90's and didn't get into music till about '04. Wow that makes me feel much younger. But I did watch a lot of cartoons and I definitely think that the cartoons we kids had in the 90's were WAY better than the crap that's on now. In fact I have a list of my favorite tv shows when I was a kid, and most of it I would still watch if I felt like it. (I'm 20 btw.)

As far as music, all I got exposed to was what my parents listened to (70's and 80's), boy bands (some were...ok), Brittney Spears (puke!), and Spice Girls (They're alright I guess).

Jester - it's totally fine. Hey, music is music is music. I listened to a track from Chinese Democracy and found that it was missing the sound that I really liked from GnR.

Of course, lately I've been listening to a lot of Jacques Brel, so you may wish to ignore my opinions about music.

well, i made a list of the bands that most of you gave last night and built a playlist of tracks and gave it to said kid with the hope that he will wake up and realize that there was alot more music than cobane and co. thanks to all who helped.
