  • The Bean Debate

We got into this discussion at work as we just had a chili cook off. I'm not a bean fan at all so I made chili without any beans. Couple of coworkers argued it's not chili without beans. So which do you prefer beans or no beans?

Mr. Rum and I both agree on this: BEANS!

I make chili when it's cold and cook it in my crock pot. I either use a pound of ground turkey or 1/2 pound of ground beef. 1 can of pinto beans (or red kidney) and one can of tomatoes. Throw everything into the crockpot and voila! Chili for the evening!

I guess the better question is: Gas or no gas?

          or

I make my chilli with four types of beans

            red kidney
            black beans
            chickpeas (or garbonzo beans)
            haricot beans

it bulks out the chili, making it cheaper and it also increases the protien in it

Oh, and btw, chili derives it's name from chili peppers. So...the presence of chili peppers or chili powder is what makes it chili, not beans.

I usually make mine with ground beef, onions, bell peppers. Then add tomato paste and tomato soup. Spices: oregano, cumin, chili powder, celery salt, red pepper flakes, lots of pepper. Then, at the very end, some green chilis and/or a little cilantro.

I vote beans, but you did ask for preference. Certainly is very much still chilli if you choose not to use beans. It's the chilli that makes it chilli, not the protein content of choice.

                    Doesn't matter either way.

If it has beans in it, I just swallow them whole.

I'm allergic to peppers, so chili starts to look pretty empty without beans too.

Definately with beans. My mom always made fantastic chili, with lots of beans and veggies in it. But I've found one improvement to her recipe: using my own canned tomatoes. I.e., tomatoes I canned myself, rather than purchased at the store. SOOOOOO much more flavorful!

Although I don't hate 'em, something about the texture of beans puts me off. No beans please.

I don't care either way, so long as there's not too much chili in it. I'm a light-weight when it comes to spicy foods.

ACK! I forgot to mention that I also add an envelope of chili seasoning to the mix also when I'm making my chili. Mr. Rum likes it.

Now, when Mr. Rum makes his chili, it's usually for the chili day at his work. He goes all out. 3 or 4 or 5 different types of chilis, roasting them, roasting the jalapenos, etc. It's really hot & spicy. Something I don't like as I have a delicate stomach.
