Ah, I'm also fluent in pretty much every dialect of the American South, which really is a separate language of its own.

I was joking with friends who were programming their GPS to give directions in a British dialect (said the American was too pushy). I said they should make "Southern" an option. I'm pretty fluent in southern also.. but you'd have to program "southern" for "directions for out-of-towners" and "directions for southerners" because if you ever listen to two southerners giving directions to each other, it's "down that street a little ways, and take a left where that old tree that got hit by lightning used to be, then you make a right where Justin used to live, then another left where that church used to be before they tore it down.. Hehe, I'm pretty fluent in Southern myself, having lived in Georgia for ten years, and having my whole Dad's side of the family living in Georgia (born, bred and raised)

I can read a bit of Spanish and French, but I don't speak them much, due to my hellacious accent.

I know a couple of obscene words in Bulgarian.

I can say "hello", understand the equivalent of "Hi, and how are you?" and respond "good", all in Serbian.

I also know some basic Italian, some words in at least one Filipino dialect, and random Turkish.

I'm still determined to learn Irish Gaelic and Danish.

I think I mentioned it in my OP, but learning French (did it in primary school, for about a year in high school and now second year uni), know a few Japanese words, a couple of Chinese words and I can fingerspell in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) as well as say "How may I help you?" as I have a few deaf customers. I had to learn the latter as part of my First Aid class in high school (we had a class where we could study for our First Aid certificate while doing a bunch of other assignments relating to it, but weren't marked by Red Cross. One of those assignments was on disabilities and how to modify First Aid for them)

Mother tongue is Quebecker (which is to Euro French as American English is to British English, pretty much); I'm generally recognized as French/English bilingual, could probably have simple conversations in Spanish, and barely survive in German with a dictionary and other reference stuff.

I think that's enough, but I would love to learn some Asian languages for seduction purposes.

Hehe this thread got me back on the "I really need to pick up spanish for work possibilities" kick. So, knowing I had seen a link SOMEWHERE in the boards, I went hunting for the new years resolution thread. There I found Live Mocha Where I'm now a little over half way through Spanish 101.

My second language is French, although currently I can only really understand it if I'm reading it. My vocab is shot to hell. It's been a decade since I spoke it truly fluently.

I also understand 'Restaurant Spanish,' which is really NYC Spanglish. Not useful in the least, unless one wants to threaten a waiter.

I can speak some russian (took 2 years of it in high school) but I've forgotten a lot of it now, but I can still somewhat read Cryllic.

I can speak some spanish from working in jobs that require it over the years. I strongly recommend that anyone in states with a large hispanic population take spanish instead of a language like russian to rebel (yup I'm still kicking myself for that one). Here you could have actually gotten more money for being bilengual, and some jobs required you to speak spanish (Southern California). At the time I was trying to be a rebel teen, and it turns out I was just a dumbass douche.

                        I also speak stupid fluently.

i speak spanish fluently, and can usually puzzle out italian if it's written. from my linguistics program (which has a focus on indigenous american languages), i've learned a bit of qanjob'al and kichee (both mayan languages). and i know a little french, but not enough to hold a conversation.

I should discuss with Lizziebeff and we can team up and pick a language from Rosetta Stone. One of my aunties recommends it--she and her husband used it for German.

rosetta stone is and awesome program. not only is it one of the best programs on the market for learning a new language, they also work with native speakers of dying languages to develop programs to help pass the languages on to the younger generation. speaking as someone with a high interest in linguistic preservation, that alone would make me a fan.

the program is expensive, but so worth it.
