  • Don't Come back for 6 months . . .

My Dad called just a short time ago with some good news.

For the newbies, my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer in May 2008 after a colonoscopy. He'd collapsed at work about 3 weeks earlier and was in the hospital for a couple of days for tests (I found this out after the fact and chewed him out b/c he and my stepmom chose not to tell me at the time, as any child should in that case.)

He underwent surgery June 2nd, and had a little over a foot of his colon removed. Five days later, after pathology reports came back and he was eating normally (and his digestive tract was also starting to function normally as well) went home. Luckily, the cancer was localized and the surgeon didn't feel that any chemo was needed.

Since then, he's had a CT scan 2 weeks after surgery, then more bloodwork and another CT in September. On the CT scan in mid-June, there were a few spots found that couldn't be identified right away (2 on one of his lungs, one on his liver and another on his pancreas) so the next CT was set for September.

Both bloodwork and CT for September came back fine . . . the spots were apparently cysts, as they had not changed in any way since the June CT.

He underwent more bloodwork around December, which came back good. The next CT was set for this past Wednesday (6 months after the September '08 one.)

Dad went back to the doctor on Monday, but I'd not had time to call to find out and he's been working late all week.

Turns out the CT scan was fine. His doctor decided not to do another blood workup in 3 months, but 6 when he has his next CT scan.

So that's great news . . . he can't go back to the doctor for 6 months now instead of 3.
