  • Pseudo Virus Warning - Malware Defender 2009

I just got a popup for "Malware Defender 2009" - if you get this - close out that popup, DO NOT CLICK OK (I do not know if Cancel cancels it or not).

It is a pseudo virus - it will infect your system and pooint you to their software to "remove it" (usually not cheap).

If you DO get infected, Malwarebytes' Anti-malware is free, and will clean it. Make sure to run it from safe mode.

You may need to rename the installation program to mb.exe.

I thought it would look like a fake version of the Windows security center, which is what most of these pseudo viruses tend to look like (i.e. MS Antivirus 2008).

I got hit by one of those back in December. ::twitch:: I think it went by the name of Spyware Defender or something like that.

I had a customer with the Spyware Guard or Security virus and man did it kick his ass HARD. I did every anti-virus software I could think of (Malwarebytes, Avast, Super AntiSpyware, HijackThis, SmitFraud Fix) in safe mode w/ networking to remote access his computer (except for Super AntiSpyware since it doesn't allow you to run it in Safe Mode) and the damn thing was still there. The Antivirus 360 and the MS Antivirus 2009 and MS Antivirus 2010 were one of the worst ones I've had to deal with at work, they're a real bitch to remove.

In my case, a System Restore managed to fix the problem (thank Heavens!). Nothing else would clean it out either. Ugh.

What bugs me most is that the virus in December, and another one in January, both seem to have come from advertisements on otherwise safe sites.

i have been seeing a few of the new extortion-wares infecting all the system restore points, we had 14 infected by one or more of them that were totally hosed. 14 2hr image restores. bleah! lets hope that this new one doesnt get an upgrade like conflicker

Oh, I know, SteeleDragon. I was lucky in December. The infection in January completely disabled System Restore. That one was taken out by SuperAntiSpyware (among others).

And then something else started acting weird and pre-infection-like about a month ago (Google hijack, among other things), so I ended up just doing a complete restore of my computer. It's behaving right now, but I'm being extra careful.

Hmmm. Seems to work when I tried it just now. Maybe a temporary outage?
