Ok, I now hate you Irv. And anyone else who lives near a HPB store. I used to live in the DFW area, and there were 6? (several of them at any rate) of them around the area. I used to set myself a limit of $25 a week on books. My collection grew just a little.

And now the nearest decent used book store is an hour plus away. The nearest HPB is 2 hours away.

Joi, very bad choice for an addict... There are currently 28 books in that series...
        And I have them all
??? What am I missing? I just gathered them together to re-read in prep for The Dreeson Incident and there can't be that many. Are you counting Gazettes that aren't out in paper?

My husband and I have cut our HPB visits short because we have to make room for the baby. The boy is going to have to live in half a room, with the rest filled with bookcases. I suppose there's worse ways to grow up than surrounded by books, but I feel bad he can't have his own room for a couple years at least.

Back in college, I used to frequent a used bookstore AND coffee shop all in one.

The two in johnson county were right on my old delivery route for the pharmacy as well as Vintage stock, suffice it to say I often came back with several goodies.

Interesting. I'd have thought the fact that he was actually paid on book sales would have helped salve his aching pride, unless he was paid on final price?

I'm reasonably sure that authors are only paid on the original sale.

In which case he would have received full value. Maybe it's me, but pride can't really be used to pay your landlord. I'm assuming he was dismayed that his work was going out cheaply.

He wasn't buying the books for resale. He was buying them for his own Library. My friend was simply interested in reading them and owning them. The 99 cent editions from 23rd Street would have served him perfectly well. Instead, he was paying in excess of 30 USD each, plus shipping to get them from booksellers in Ireland.

BTW: The author was Brian Nolan in his various incarnations.

                        OT but, I hope touching.

Before our Library moved to antiseptic new quarters, a Gentleman came into the old Library with his son. The child was probably about 7 years-old.

                        May I help you, Sir.

(with a sheepish grin) No, thank you. I just want my son to know how Libraries are supposed to smell.

Interesting. I'd have thought that publishers would have given the author a copy or two of their own work. (Unless I missed something).

Maybe just one of those changing times things - shrug.

Oh crap. Somehow, I'd got it into my head that LL had been in contact with the author and he was the one livid. My bad - skim reading strikes again.
