  • Susan Boyle makeover

I read on MSNBC.com that Susan Boyle got a makeover to improve her looks and a lot of people are upset that she did that. My question is this:What does her looks have to do with the way she sings? I don't get it.
People forget that long before MTV & videos became all the rage that a lot of hit songs were sung by artists that weren't all that photogenic. A good example would be Christopher Cross who had such hits as "Sailing" & "Best That You Can Do". He was HUGE in the early 80's just before MTV became a staple. Once MTV took over the airwaves, you never heard from him again cause he was deemed "too ugly for video". But you know damn well that he's a very good singer.
Personally, I don't care what a singer looks like. Long as they sing good then who cares what they look like?

I agree, but to an extent. Everyone feels a little better about themselves with a positive change of appearance.

How many people actaully see music videos too? I think I've seen MAYBE a total of a dozen music videos. So yea...could care less what people look like.

          Trust me, it's NOTHING dramatic:

Hair dyed, less frizzy, probably a little makeup, and some sleeker clothes. She looks better, but not really different. I think the new hair color is a good look on her.

I agree, she still looks like herself. I'm not bothered by it. If she had done a dramatic change, that might irritate me, but it's nothing out of the ordinary. Can't wait to hear her sing again!

Well...back when video killed the radio star and all MTV played WAS videos (it was amazing...a video channel that played *gasp* videos!!!!!) ....there were some not so pretty musicians on the airways...not many...but not all of them were hot or gentle on the eyes.

I was about 10 years old or a bit younger when MTV came out. My childhood would never be the same.

                  I say GOOD FOR SUSAN!!!

If she wants to look a certain way then well done, if she wants to "tidy" herself up a bit then good for her as well.

This woman spent years caring for her aging and then dying parents, she could dye her hair purple and I would still love her. People always harp on about peoples appreance good or bad so she might as well do what she wants.

I can't wait until she brings out a CD I will be first in line. She seems to be dying to come out of her shell and unlike most of the crap we are feed by muisc companies we finally have a "real" person out there. That feels nice.

I think it's great - if it gives her confidence, then go for it! I actually thought she looked fine in the beginning, just a bit of an eyebrow tweeze.

I think she looks gorgeous! It's not like she went out and became a cross between Brittney Spears/Christina Agulara/Jennifer Lopez or something. She improved on what she had to work with, without going over board.

I'll still buy her CD when it comes out. Sheesh.

One of my favorite (of many) singer/songwriters is Cheryl Wheeler. The first time I saw her (15 years ago) I thought:
                        Frizzy hair: check
                        Pot Belly: check
                        Attitude: check
                        I love this woman: check

She has written some of the most achingly beautiful, tear up and blubber songs I know...

Arrow, 75 Septembers, Since You've Been Gone

And some of the best piss-yourself laughing funny songs too...

                        My Cat's Birthday, Gandhi/Buddha, Handy-House (We're Gonna Poop In)...

That's what I was going to say. They dyed and cut her hair, waxed her eyebrows a bit. It's not like they gave her a new face or anything.

The thing is, even when i don't give a rodent's sphincter how she looks, I love her voice AND attitude, I do think her attitude and voice and style is PERFECT for brodway or similar musicals, and there, I am not suggesting a plastic surgery at ALL but some self care, nice dressing, and makeup will help a lot

Broadway - not likely. An album of torch songs? Sure. A concert performance? Absolutely. But I don't see her in a leading role in a Broadway musical - where, lately, looks count more than voice. Maybe West End's different, though.
