  • in the hospital

ao last night i'm sitting and watching tv with my wife when i cough and suddenly there's this sharp, crushing pain on the right side of my chest and i can't breathe. i get in and they get me straight to xray, and the next thing i know a whole team of er staff comes running into my room.

my lung collapsed. let me tell you, even under the influence of heavy, heavy narcotics and sedatives, getting a chest tube put in was one of the most painful experiences i've ever had in my life. i definitely would not recommend it.

so now im in the hospital until furter notice. yay! i already used all my sick and vacation time when i had gall bladder surgery, two weeks agoonce again, yay!

                an update!

tomorrow, after 10 days in the hospital, 3 chest tubes, one surgery, and a removed portion of lung, i get to go home.

i'm doing ok now. the first few days were pretty touch and go; every time they took me off the pump my lung would collapse again. finally they performed surgery to repair the ruptured area as well as any weak areas they could find that may ruputre in the future. they found one section of my lung that had so many blebs (what they call the weak spots) that they took the whole section out. my lung was at last able to maintain inflation after the surgery. the last chest tube came out this morning, and my last chest x-ray this afternoon came back clear, so if tomorrow morning's blood panel comes back ok (and there's no reason it shouldn't) then i finally get to go home. yay!

now htough i have to worry about the 3-4 weeks i'll be out of work before i'm able to go back, and the fact that i've missed almost two weeks of classes with finals starting on tuesday. if i don't think i'll be able to prepare for the finals in time i have to pray that my profs will allow an incomplete so that i can finish the classes over the summer.

Wow, that's harsh. I hope you heal quickly, and just try not to worry too much. Getting better has to be priority right now.

There's no reason your profs shouldn't allow you to get an incomplete...those exist for things like this. It's not like you did anything stupid to land yourself in the hospital for 10 days - you could have died. Make sure you get a really awesome doctor's note

Your professors should offer you an incomplete, but you should contact them ASAP, if you haven't already, and let them know what's going on. If one of my students had stopped showing up for class for two weeks, I'd be worried sick about them!

Oh my! Get well soon, and owrry about that before worrying about work and school. Do contact your profs though, like everyone else said. I'm sure they'll be understanding. -virtual gentle hugs as well to both you AND your wife- (I know I'd be going crazy if that happened to my fiance!)
