  • I'm looking for old school style RPGs

I'm looking for some old school style RPG games (PC). Something like Might and Magic, Bards Tale, Spelljammer, Pool of Radiance, Baulder's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, etc.

Something newer is OK but it doesn't need to be top of the line, I'd rather have a good game with good replay value as opposed to something that is going to choke my computer with the highest end graphics.

    Suggestions?

    Planescape Torment

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura

Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics

Practically anything made by Bioware or Black Isle (before Interplay folded)

I actually have my old fallout and fallout 2 discs.

Arcanum - the game that's tech or magic? Wow, that's an oldie but you're right - it was a good game.

Next time I'm out and about maybe I'll check out the $10 bargain bins most stores have.

Might want to try Best Buy for Neverwinter Nights or most others, got my copy for about $20 several years ago there.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

Ooo... I love Arcanum. One of my favourite games.

Hmm...I really need to get that PC built so I can play it again.

What about Morrowind? The original, not the new one. Should run fine on most current machines, even if it was too graphics-heavy when it came out.

And you could always go back to the Myst series. Or try their new online game.

I got the Diamond version last year for $20 at BB - maybe I'll throw that one back on (and I got the Hoards of the Underdark add-on, too).

Myst wasn't my thing and I do have Morrowind but I could never get it to work on my machines.

I have a bunch of old ones but none of them work on XP (Spelljammer: Pirates of Realmspace (I did find one version that works in XP but I need a manual for the copy protetion!), Bards Tale, and a bunch of packs from SSI / TSR. Maybe I'll even throw Icewind Dale onto the system - if I can find the other discs (I can only find disc 1 now).

              depends....

do you want video, or will text only be ok?

if text only is good - check out Ancient Anguish. It's pretty old school... been around since 1992.

Wow, text games, I still MUD on occastion.

But those were some good games - Zork, Planetfall, some I had on my C=64 I don't even remember the names, to....

I can't get Fallout to install - it keeps saying that there is a newer version of DirectX on the disc (3a) even though I've gone to MS and downloaded the latest version. Don't tell me I'll need to re-re-re-reinstall Windows, again.

Edit: I can't find the manual for NeverWinter nights, so I can't use that (lame copy protection!)

my hubby recommends Hillsfar, Rogue, the eye of the beholder trilogy, wizardry, and if you're looking for a civilization type game with magic and wizards, look up master of magic,

ETA: When we installed fallout it kept telling us that too, but we just clicked "ignore" and the game installed/ran fine..

What about King's Quest? Those were fun games. There's 8 in all...apparently the first 7 can be bought in a collector's pack.

Seconded, but good luck getting the third one to run with sound. Dosbox and VDMS both worked fine for the first and second games.

Play em in order...importing your party makes for a fun second game, and it's not remotely "too easy" for the levels and gear. There are sections that will really make you sweat. :-)

this is the purpose of our old computer.. playing old games. ^_^ (it runs on DOS 6.0 for the curious)

Oh yeah...and I wouldn't recommend getting Pool of Radiance. If you can borrow it, sure. But don't buy it. Great overall story, but the play got frustrating and the ending is a let down. >.<

I think I have Pool of Radiance on a CD - I may throw DOS / Win98 on an older laptop just for these games. I think I have an old Toshiba Satellite pro somewhere.

I picked up the Fallout Trilogy last night and it installed fine and plays mostly OK - sometimes the screen blacks out and I need to "paint" it to get it back, though. (Odd).
