  • New Cell phone day in T-39 days!

Bigger than Christmas and my birthday combined is NEW CELL PHONE DAY!

I'm going all out this year, and moving from AT&T to T-Mobile for the fabled G1.

I'll be saving a ton of money per month over my AT&T plan, even considering that I get a discount on my plan with AT&T at work.

So, the reason for my post..

    1. Porting numbers... easy?
    2. T-Mobile...opinions?
    3. G1... opinions?
    4. New cell phone day... comments!

I love love love T-mobile! I've used their service for nearly a year now and have had almost zero problems with them. As for the G1, I'd kill for it.

    Lucky you and congrats!

I sort of have my eye on the samsung soul or something similar. The G1 is really cool but it's expensive and I have an anarchic habit of liking my phones to have the 12 traditional buttons but that's just me.

It depends what features you want in a phone. For example I need tri/quad band and want a good battery life with everything else being shiny extras. What kind of stuff do you use your cell phone for?

I've not been with t-mobile but I hear they're good.
How was I supposed to know someone was slipping you Birth Control in the food I've been making for you lately?

I'm a product tester so I get a new phone every month - none of which are available to the public and usually won't be for sale for at least 6 months.

I "need" all the bright shinies. I need email, full website display. REAL QWERTY keyboard is a must.

I like the intergration with Google. That's just cool.

Ouch... my new minion pointed me to the LG Xenon. It's cheaper.... and it's AT&T. But AT&T's plan is more expensive.....

              WAAAHA!!!

I Love my T-Mobile. I have been with them for at least 6 years and have had only a couple of issues. The biggest one being that an old phone I had needed to be turned off occasionally to reboot it or it would drop calls. Other than that I have had no trouble with them at all. They have even looked at my bill several times and come up with ways to help save me money on the bill. I can't say enough good things about them.

I work in the WLNP (porting) department at a cellular provider.

Here is some basic advice to help make your porting experience as smooth as possible.

Do not cancel your service with AT&T, the number needs to be active in order for the porting to occur.

The porting process should take roughly 1 to 2 hours depending on how busy both providers are. You begin the process by calling T-Mobile since they are the new provider. In almost every instance if you have questions or want to check the status of the port call T-mobile first and then only call AT&T if T-mobile asks you to.

Checklist of info to have ready when you call to do a port.

                      The phone number (of course)
                      The account number
                      The account holder's name
                      The address of the account
any security pin/number etc - AT&T tends not to ask for this if the new carrier is able to provide the other above information.

I hear many many good things from customers of ours that use both our service and T-mobile and love it. Beyond that not much else I can say since I have never used the service myself.

If after the port occurs you can make calls out but calls to your number still go to the AT&T phone give it 24 hours. If the problem still persists after this you need to call AT&T to make sure the line canceled from their service after they confirmed the port out. - This happens on about 1 in every 30 ports or so. More often than not it is an issue with computers being slow since the process is mostly automated.

I've had T-Mobile for 2 years now under my sisters account, and just ported my number to my own personal account, and added my fiance's number to it, so we have a family plan. Even with the data package for my G1, it's still worthwhile.

You'll love the G1. Once you start looking at all the apps there are, you'll be lost, but beware, the battery life when you use the 3G network to download things, or surf the web, it'll eat through the battery power in no time. I can use mine for 2 days IF I don't use 3G, or the apps very much, but if I do, I have to charge it every day.
