  • Buying a car, need help

I've never bought a car before, but I really need one. My current car doesn't have air conditioning, and that is just not possible for this area.

I live in Vegas, and want to buy a used car. Even a cheap one would work so long as it gets me through summer. But I need some advice/tips

What should I look for? Checking all the controls and lights is obvious, but anything else I should check?

What results in cheaper auto insurance? Year, model, etc?

How much should I put for a down payment, percentage-wise?

And anything else you can offer. Thanks in advance. ^^

This site has some good advice. Especially the part about AAA. It's saved my butt more times than I like to admit :/
I have a...thing. Wanna see it?

Yeah, my Grandparents have AAA. Actually, G-ma's kids bought it for them as a gift, and it actually started the day the truck broke down taking me home from college. Talk about serendipity!

Check Cars.com to see what might be available in your area. You can use KellyBlueBook.com to see what an appropriate price would be for a particular year/make/model, and make sure to get a Carfax.

I bought my baby new, and just sucked it up and dealt with a loan...but I really wanted her, and they didn't start making the Fit for the US until 2008. So I had no choice.

A few notes: Honda Accords have the least depreciation, but they also are the most stolen cars, so it's common to find ones that have been rebuilt with less than 20,000 miles on them. They're worth it. My sister currently owns my old Accord (96, bought in 97) and it's still a great car.

Don't buy something that is from a dead company. God forbid you ever have to get a part replaced.

See if anyone around you is looking to sell a car. You never know, a coworker's uncle/mother/sibling might have one they're willing to sell you for less-than-value.

GET A CARFAX REPORT. Doesn't matter who is selling it, you WANT that piece of paper that says "this car has never been on fire/drowned/exploded/etc."

Hmm. Can't think of much else right now.
