Last summer, an old friend of mine named Jay introduced me to jogging. He runs every morning at the crack of dawn, before breakfast.
Not to be outdone, I laced up the sneakers and started dawn-jogging myself. I did so every other morning for the entire summer, until the weather got too cold for outdoor activities. During the deep freeze, I used a treadmill.
Now that summer is here again, I've discovered just how useless my treadmill is for keeping in shape. In the meantime, Jay claimed to be able to run 20 km. Braggard
As far as my own running, last year it didn't seem like I was making any real progress. Whenever I exceeded performance, the next time I ended up falling back.
But now I've made real progress. For 3 consecutive days I've done better than the last time. Today I ran for 2 km, and I only had to slow to catch my breath once. Last summer it was more like 5 slowdowns. I didn't think I had any energy to run after that, but I managed to do some running on the way back. So it was more like a 4 km round trip. I was out there jogging/brisk-walking for almost a full hour.
I'm sure this little victory is pocket change compared to Jay's running. But the summer is still young. Better keep up Jay, I'll catch you yet!
