I love playing soccer. I do. But I'm not a fan of watching it, and I'm not sure how I feel about pubs during soccer matches. I don't drink beer (blech!) and I've heard things can get a bit rowdy. I won't trash talk them though, so can that be an amicable solution??

And don't forget if you are going to live in London, you have to support Manchester United
You only live round the corner! And don't encourage thegiraffe. I get to hear enough about Man United and Liverpool with Saint Steven Gerrard, aka the DJ Hitter.

      (I'm a Chelsea fan)

Huh? I thought that would be more likely up around Greater Manchester? Otherwise how would you go to home games at Old Trafford? You would want to be nearer to Trafford wouldn't you? Just IMHO. I've been pushed into Chelsea, SO's team. He lived in England as a kid, and not in London itself so he really isn't too much help.

Good Luck thegiraffe with your job hunting, sounds like it could be an awesome experience!
Began work Aug as casual '08

Why do I still work there again?

You don't ever have to go to a match to be a supporter of a team, hell, I was a supporter of United for many years, despite onyl ever seeing them once, much later, where they played against my home towns team in a friendly as the first match for the newly built stadium for my home team.

It's a running joke in the UK that the only supporters of Manchester United are all located south of the Watford Gap, those who live in Manchester normally support Manchester City. (Pro tip, never get the two mixed up!)

You can find pubs that don't have TVs and suprisingly enough we have come far enough in civilisation to have other varieties of alcohol other than beer (although in some pubs your choice of wine will be Red or White)

In London you will be spoilt for choice for watering holes, enjoy!

I thought pubs were sports bars? I dunno...if something says "pub" on it over here, it has TVs, beer, and not much food.

Pub is pretty much the British word for bar or tavern.

It may have TVs, it may serve food, or it may not.

Pub is just short for 'public house' as in a place where the public can gather. It usually serves alcohol, quite a few serve food (and good food, a lot of them) it may be tv free, or have a tv, it may play music (live sometimes) or it may not.

In my tiny city there are 5 pubs on my fifteen minute walk to work. One is very traditional- alcohol, bar snacks, no tv, no music, one is a wine bar and gastro pub, one specialises in live music most nights, and one is cheap drinks and food.

Best thing to do is to look around, find one where you like the atmosphere and become a regular.

I know you don't like beer, but british beer is VERY different to american! It's stronger, for a start and can range in colour from almost clear to black, and can include chocolate flavoured beer. I'm not a beer drinker, even I like the odd sip from Jos's glass when he gets one of the more interesting ones.

Chocolate beer, Ginger? Yeesh! I think beer is entirely too strong as it is. I'm more of a sweet sparkling wine person (a la Moscatto di asti...mmmm) if anything. I'll have a glass every very rare now and then.

As far as the job goes, it didn't pan out. It requires a BSW (Bachelor's of social work). I have a BA in psychology plus experience that gives me the same qualifications as a BSW, but evidently that little piece of paper is important....

                      SO...onward to the next opportunity!

Thanks for the British culture lesson everyone!!!!!

Um... I guess you aren't aware that sparkling wine is actually rather stronger than most beers.

Now, if you're talking taste, American beer is pretty crap, as far as I'm concerned. Then again, if it's not thick enough to chew, I'm not interested.

... and I'm still a little miffed that my friend took the bottle of chocolate stout he'd promised me with him when he left a convention a couple years back...

Maybe she meant taste as opposed to alcohol content?

I hear this a lot and wonder where it comes from. There are thousands of great American beers. I've had hundreds.

There's a place in Oregon whose name escapes me that specializes in stouts, including an incredible chocolate. Central Waters down in Amhurst Wisconsin makes a phenomenal coffee stout. I road trip there every now and then just for it. Closer to home is one of my favorites, New Glarus Brewing, whose Spotted Cow and Fat Squirrel are both excellent. With over 1500(?) breweries here I imagine one or two of them might turn out something you wouldn't consider crap. (You might try Angel City or Black Diamond out there in Socal.)
