  • rotator cuff curgery--part deux

I think everyone knows that in Sept. 2006 I was run over by an 18-wheeler. I had rotator cuff surgery in June 2007 (earliest I could fiscally schedule it). Feb 2008 it re-tore, but original surgeon would not believe me.

May 2008 I had hip replacement surgery. (Summer semester is the only time I can schedule major surgeries that are not OMGWTFBBQ true emergencies.)

Dec 2007 the left shoulder tore. Mar 2008 I got both shoulders MRI'd

I consulted a new shoulder specialist in Nov 2008 hoping to get the left shoulder done over xmas break, as it hurt worse than the right. The doctor looked at the MRIs and said the right shoulder was in much worse condition than the left. I still scheduled the left first, over spring break, because it hurt worse, planning on the right over the summer.

Dec 30 my father fell and broke his arm; Feb, mom totalled her car coming home from the hospital, and ended back up in the ER with 6 broken ribs. Dad ended up coming home for hospice, and passed away on Mar 1, 2009.

I cancelled the surgery on the left shoulder to deal with all this.

Yesterday, I had the surgery on the right shoulder. The doctor was able to do everything arthroscopically, I think, and took before and after photos. You know what shredded beef looks like? When the briscuit has been roasting over indirect heat for 12 hours till it falls apart just by looking at it? That's what the before pics looked like. The tendon was still barely attached to the bone by just a few shreds.

    Here's hoping this surgery holds!!

I'm still hoping on getting the left one done over this coming xmas break.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

We took the sling off for a few minutes this morning to change (ok, put on) clothes due to company coming over. Judging from the size of the bandages, it was not arthroscopic, but more likely full-open surgery. Oh well...that explains why it hurts so much more this time, even with oxycontin and percoset. And it's just one more scar to add to the collection, and to the litigation against the trucking company that hit me.

As fur the photos, I apologize for the shredded beef analogy, but that's the best description applicable. I will try to post photos somewhere and link to them when I get the CD.
