      Congradulations, McGoddess!

I have to say, I like the white and red combo. My high school was navy blue robes with yellow sashes for valedictorian and salutatorian.

My high school colors were navy blue and gold. Guys got blue robes and girls got gold. I do not wear yellow for a reason. Thank god I was in National Honor Society cuz we all wore white.

At my college graduation everyone had black cap and gown and our tassel and sash color reflected our degree (BA or BS). School colors were blue and gray.

National Honor Society (besides being a joke at my school) meant getting to wear a medal - IF you weren't the Valedictorian or Salutatorian. My school was very very strict on what could and couldn't be worn at graduation, but over and under the gown. Guys had to wear ties and blue or black dress slacks, girls had to wear dresses and white shoes (a few years before I graduated they began to allow sandals sans hose). And you had to have the mortarboard flat (not cocked over to the side) and you couldn't put writing on the top or pink fuzzies or Christmas lights or whatever all over it.

ETA: I think pretty much all colleges/universities follow the same rules for regalia. Tassel/hood color depends on which college you're in (Fine Arts = brown, Arts = White, for example). Bachelor robes have pointed sleeves, Master robes have the funky sleeves with the little pocket that hangs down, Doctoral robes have belled sleeves with three stripes on each shoulder. The doctoral hood is also a lot longer than the master's hood (which is a huge pain to keep straight, btw). Now, some specific schools have different colored robes (Yale - blue, Harvard - red, etc.) and some doctorates get different hats. It's all kind of fun, and looking at all the pretty robes gives you something to do during a long, boring graduation ceremony!

The yellow for us means honor student. =)

Your school colors are like the ones from my baby sister's old high school: red, white and black. The only thing was both the guys and girls wore white for the caps & gowns. The light blue ribbon was for the national honor society, then there was the gold cord for honors.

                    Well, yeah....

My school was very very strict on what could and couldn't be worn at graduation,
Yeah, my high school did that too. We weren't allowed to wear shorts or we didn't get to walk. Other than no sneakers, I don't think we had any rules on shoes (well, boys had to wear dress shoes, but girls could wear nice sandals). I just wore a dress and white flats.

                    Tassel/hood color
Hood! That's the word I was looking for. I'm not sure where my tassel is. Somewhere in my bedroom, I'm sure. I'm pretty sure it was blue and white...(hood was the same color). Maybe blue, gray and white; blue, gray, yellow for BS? (I have a BA in English.)

My college didn't have anything but Bachelors when I was there. They have since added a Masters of Science program in Occupational Therapy, I think they started it my senior year, or the year after. That's still the only advanced degree they offer. (God, I graduated college 12 years ago! )

All of my graduation paraphanalia is at Mom and Dad's. Of course, I'll have to save this round's cap, gown, and such, since it will be my outfit for every graduation I attend as (hopefully) a faculty member. I would like to do a think Mom did for Mindy for her birthday one year - take the tassels from every single graduation (Kindergarten, 6th grade, high school, college, and for me, master's) and frame them in a shadow box. It looks really neat.

I also need to get my degrees framed. Those are in a safe...somewhere.

We call the one teacher at my school "Hagrid" .... it was usually due to the huge coat she wore and shes also very tall, but the black graduation gown made it even more apparent. It was funny.

Did you get beach balls flying during the ceremony?

A few kids managed to sneak them in. At least one of them got captured by a teacher, who put it under her chair, and another kid managed to steal it back, blow it back up, and send it flying again.

One of the kids' family had one and a fog horn during my ceremony (this was almost 7 years ago). Once that kid's name was called you hear the family shouting and then the fog horn going off and see a beach ball bouncing around and that was in one of the balcony seats!
