I tend to wear my earrings for a month at a time*/** (yeah, I'm weird. I can't believe it took you so long to figure that out!), and am curious as to whether I should take my pearl earrings out when I take a shower?

*I wear whatever that months' birthstone is, generally. If it's one of the few months whose stones I don't care for, I tend to wear my plain gold studs/hoops.

**I do make sure to turn my earrings at least once a day to make sure they aren't sticking.

Oh, and your tool box called...you got out again.

With pearls, it probably is a good idea to remove them when you shower, since they're not really stone. Soaps, shampoos, and the like could cause damage to them. It wouldn't happen quickly, but over time you might notice that the surface becomes duller and starts feeling rougher.

If you have opals for October, don't wear them in the shower. I had an opal pendant that I wore in the shower a couple times, and the stone broke apart. My mom got it replaced but it isn't as pretty as the first one was. Opals have veins in them and the water gets in there and pulls the stone apart.

Pearls won't fall apart like that but they'll probably get dull from soap and stuff building up on them.

I got a pearl ring and, in addition to what Kittish said about soap damaging the surface, I was told that most pearl jewelry is glued into its setting so water/soap/moisture would weaken that bond. Sooo, no. Don't wear your pearls in the shower

The only jewelry I ever wear in the shower or the bath is my Wedding ring. That's just a simple gold band that won't cause any problems.

I never wear earrings to bed. Posts can be uncomfortable and wires can come loose causing an irksome situation inside the sheets.

If you're nursing a new piercing you may want to keep it in while sleeping. A better choice might to put in a small wire to keep the piercing open rather than wear the new earring.
