  • Update on the 20 year old debt

I haven't heard a single thing back from the woman or the company she works for about a bill in my maiden name. They claimed I went to SD where I used my maiden and gave my address here in PA.

    1. I don't ever for any reason use my maiden name.
    2. I haven't been in SD for over 20 years.

So, it's impossible for me to have a bill in SD.

I also figure when she found out I use to work for a collection agency and would have no problem suing her and her company to kingdom come they decided to drop their scam and try to go back to scamming people unfamiliar with the laws.

    *chuckles* You rock Mis.

Some collection people...oh do they piss me off. One almost sent Mom into heart attack mode because they were yelling at her so loud over MY debt that I had already paid.

Mis, way to pwn their asses! I really think that these scammy collection agencies should be investigated and shut down for their shady tactics.

Out of curiosity, was there anything you said/did to get them off your back other than that you used to work for one yourself?

Asking because I've started being harassed by one the past few weeks and I doubt I would have any debt... have never had any bills in my name, college is all paid up to date and no loans, and I haven't had an apartment in my name yet either. So I can't see anything. My medical stuff is all paid off and goes through my father's name anyway since he's the insurance policy holder. I never got anything in the mail and they're refusing to give me many details, which is just making me suspicious.

Good that you got them off your back, though!

I told the woman that I had not been in SD for over 20 years, so there was no bills there for me to pay, let alone one for an ambulance. I told her that if I did have a bill come up after I left, it is well past the time they can collect on it

She started screaming at me that there is no time limits on judgments and she would send out the itemized list. Yes, dumbass broad, there are even limits on judgments, but I shouldn't have to tell her how to do her own damn job.

I told her to bring it, since I was a debtor collector for some years, but if I saw one thing hinky in it I will report them to the attorney general of both SD and PA.

I have been waiting almost two weeks for this mysterious itemized list.

I checked all three of my credit reports and there is nothing negative on any of them. I stopped worrying about this mysterious charge when I saw my credit histories were all clean.

Scum collectors like that woman (not me, I was never sleazy even if I thought the person was full of shit. If someone was obviously lying to me I passed those calls on to BossMan.

BossMan made damn sure that we all know the laws on collection before he would ever let us take a call.

Anyway, I hope that helped and made sense, since I took my Ambien and I don't always make sense when I have taken it.

Good for you. I've had to deal with companies trying to collect from me for debts that were not mine, and always managed to get them to back down.

One was, I believe my Father's, since both our first and last names are the same. They pick up my change of address information every time I move, and send me a new bill, which I promptly call them and yell at them about. Since they do not include a middle initial on the bills, it's impossible to tell one from another.

The other was back when I was in my early 20's, and the public service company had an outstanding balance on an account that was more than 10 years old. I showed them my ID and asked them if they typically set up accounts for minors. That took care of that one.

This thread makes me feel quite terrible about being a bill collector, but I know I'm not like that.

My managers all say the same thing, when someone denies the debt so vehemently, let them go, they obviously aren't going to pay it. Plus if it's something that goes on their credit report, they'll be back in a few years when they realize it's on there.

I'm not one to go to the jugular, but I know my laws. I'm glad my agency doesn't have 20-year-old bills, I would be horribly embarrassed to even try and collect on those! The oldest ones I've seen are about 7 years, if that.

7 years is as far as they're allowed to go back, and even then...there are limitations. Either way, I'd tell them to "get bent"

Mis, you should write some articles on this sort of topic. Now with this economy you can bet that there's a good bunch of those scammy bill collectors harassing innocent people for debts they don't owe. I've had my friend (what I call) Ambien dial me late at night a few times.

Anyone care to remember July of last year when I started a thread about getting sued by a collection agency over some credit card debt????

Nope. Still haven't heard a peep out of them. The case is still sitting open in county court.

The zombie debt collectors are horrible, but I think the scummiest are the ones that convince relatives of dead debtors to pay bills the dead left behind. They are collecting money from people who don't owe it, and often these people are elderly, poor and/or undereducated, so they have no idea that they don't have to pay. Sometimes, the survivors pay the money because they feel that the unpaid debt leaves a stain on the memory of the deceased. I felt sick when I first read about it.

It's not just the deceased's debts the sleazy collectors do this to. Even if you've already paid off the debt, they will call you up with some bogus claim saying that you still owe them debts. Worse, they call you over bogus debts you never had, like in Mis' case.

Well just to make a point I decided to "celebrate" the first anniversary of those jerkoffs suing me by filing a complaint online with Indiana's Attorney General's office.

If you wanna play hardball with me that's cool. I can throw some very nasty curves if you're interested.
