    Dear DGoddess Chardonnay, do I ever remember 8 track tapes!

    We had a curator who was a bit of a hoot. He instituted Aloha Shirt Day and did things just right. On the appointed day, he offered pineapple in his office. The place was lit only by strings of palm tree lights and, wonder of wonders, an 8 track was playing Elvis singing 'Blue Hawaii". What could be better?

      Ok, this thread is making me feel nostalgically happy and very old at the same time!

      • Saturday morning cartoons, two words: Captain Caveman!
      Speaking of Captain Caveman . . . enjoy the intro.

      And while I was browing, I also found Fraggle Rock.

      Want vintage . . . try Penelope Pitstop.

          I'm younger than everyone ( born 1987) but I still remember a lot of things that aren't around anymore.

          My sister and I shared a bedroom, we were the first kids on our block to get a TV in our room. It was a B/W 13" monitor that had a wire hanger jammed into the back for an antenna. For some reason, we didn't get ABC but we got FOX, CBS, NBC and some sort of televangelist channel.

          Does anyone remember WebTV? We had it for about a year. (1997-98)
          After my dad got rid of WebTV, if we needed on the internet, he took us to the public library, where there were 4 computers hooked up to the internet.

          I remember the Power Rangers. I watched the first episode.

          Hanson... I was convinced that I was gonna marry Zach Hanson (the drummer, who was like 12.) Still have mmmbop on my ipod.

          I also LOVED the Spice Girls.

          The cartoon "Doug". Its sad they don't even show it in reruns anymore.

          I saw "Toy Story" in theaters. Three times.

            My aunt and uncle still have web TV. They only use it for email so getting a computer isn't really worth it.

              Adam - Hubby has 10 synths including a ARP odyssey (the better version of the Solus) of course there are pics...

              Some set up Synths Odyssey

              That isn't all of them of course since he hasn't got a pic of the other three.

                VERY nice!!!

                I definitely wouldn't mind owning some of those synths. I'm sure his Odyssey works a whole lot better than my Solus, which currently refuses to stop playing notes (even when first turned on, it's emitting a low note). Wouldn't mind seeing pictures of the other three synths.

                    I was born in 1973. remember:

                    * Rotary phones

                    * My parents listening to that damn Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" album on 8-track over and over again. I knew all the words before I was in kindergarten.

                    * Getting up to change the channel on the television

                    * When getting all three networks *plus* HBO was awesome!

                    * The days before VCRs. If you wanted to watch a certain movie, you had to wait until it shown on television with all the good parts cut out and 15 commercials in a row during the breaks

                    * The days before email and IM. If you wanted to talk to someone, you had to call them on the phone or *gasp* talk to them face-to-face!

                    * Friday Night Videos

                    * MTV actually playing music videos

                    * Playing Space Invaders on Atari

                    * Before the PG-13 rating was introduced (around 1984 or so), PG films could slip in nudity

                    * Getting up at 2 in the morning to watch Charles and Diana get married

                    * Johnny Carson hosting the Tonight Show

                    * When Arsenio Hall was going to kick Leno's ass (didn't quite work out that way)

                    * I remember seeing a video from some gal calling herself Madonna and thinking "Who the hell is that?"

                    * When Madonna was going to cause the fall of Western Civilization

                    * When Peter Gabriel had the most awesome music videos ever (and they are still the most awesome music videos ever)

                    * When Don Johnson was the coolest guy on TV. Miami Vice FTW!

                    * When Pierce Brosnan was Remington Steele

                    * Getting up on Saturday mornings to watch The Smurfs and The Real Ghostbusters

                    * Voltron and Tranzor-Z

                    * When there were countries called East Germany, West Germany, Czechoslovokia, Prussia and Austria-Hungary. And Russia was full of evil Commies!

                    * The Berlin Wall

                    * Ronald Reagan being shot. I was pissed because there were no cartoons on, just all this news about this boring old guy getting shot. Hey, I was 7 years old, what do you want?

                        • I liked the oldest Hanson brother, y'know, the one that looked the least like a girl.

                          I thought of another one this morning - listening to America's Top 40 every Sunday morning (or was it afternoon?) hosted by Casey Kasem, of course. That was when you could get the best songs for your mix tapes!

                            OH yes yes! There was something else that he had on Saturdays too, I think. Or maybe they moved the show....?

                            Anyway, yeah. Awesome stuff.

                            I was born in 1980, so:

                            We had a monochrome monitor (the amber or green on black computer monitors) until I was 9 or so.

                            We got an NES when I was 9 or 10. (Dad played as much as I did. )

                            Got a CD player and my first CDs when I was 14.

                            I remember the VCR remotes with the cord too.

                            I had a couple of records when I was preschool age, but my parents gave me more cassettes (probably because cassettes are not as fragile), so I'm not really clear on what I had. (I seem to remember a Care Bears record though.)

                            I remember renting videos at the store. You actually had to go to a store.

                            I loved Rainbow Brite and the Care Bears. I always rented their stuff at the video store.

                              It was 1984, actually. The first PG-13 film in wide release was Red Dawn. (I mistakenly thought it was Desperately Seeking Susan, which was out a year later.)

                              I doubt you remember Austria-Hungary or Prussia from your lifetime, as they ceased to exist as sovereign states in 1918 and 1947, respectively.

                              I actually stayed home from school sick that day, and remember it quite well. I was very fascinated by the whole thing, and watched it nonstop. And this was before CNN (or at least before we had it)!

                                I swear I remember Austria-Hungary being one country and a Prussia existing when there was still an East Germany and West Germany. Anyone else go to school in the mid 80's and remember this?
