No personal experience with that one, but I would imagine that it probably hurts quite a lot. There are a lot of nerve endings there, plus bone close to the surface on the tops of your fingers. Then you'd also have to take into account the 'twitch factor'. How still can you keep a finger while a tattoo is being done on it? It'd be really easy to twitch or jerk at just the wrong time and seriously mess up the tattoo. And it's not something you can just erase an oops and try again with.
    Pooh.

Now I have to find a new spot.

    *pout*

I asked one of the regs at work. He has numerous tats, and a no nonsense (most of the time) attitude.

He said his one finger tat *hurt*. Majorly. I believe him.

Ask them about their machines, how often they clean them, replace parts ETC. Most of the good tattoo places will actually build their own pieces, they are calibrated better and make for smoother lines.

As far as the tattoo itself goes, definitely be open to suggestions from the artists. They want to make sure you are going to love the piece, but that it will also work well on your skin. Sometimes people want something that just is too small or detailed and it ends up looking like crap. So definitely ask them for recommendations on size and such especially since it is your first tattoo!
