  • Great Albums

So I'm sitting here reading and thinking. I start thinking about great albums where I enjoy the whole thing end-to-end and not just certain songs I skip to. I figure it would be a good topic to put forth, and maybe I'll get some good recommendations for future music purchases.

Just one ground rule: Greatest Hits collections don't count, soundtracks are fair game though.

For my part, I'll put forth the following:

Welcome to the Neighbothood by Meatloaf
--Good lesser-known album by a great artist. Particularly fond of "Where the Rubber Meets the Road", "Not a Dry Eye in the House", and "Original Sin".

The Bubblegum Crisis Soundtrack for the original series
--Lots of good 80s-esque J-Pop tunes.

    Discology by Daft Punk
--Great list of songs. Highly recommend picking up the Interstella 5555 movie that puts the entire album to animation.

    Americana by The Offspring
--Great set of songs. I originally didn't care for parts of this album due to overplay on the radio, but I find myself popping it in the truck's CD player fairly often now that they don't get played as often.

    Hysteria by Def Leppard
--One of the great 80's rock albums. Excellent track order that makes the songs somehow mean more when you hear the whole album from start to finish.

I'll add more if I think of them. So what do you have to add?
The Rich keep getting richer because they keep doing what it was that made them rich. Ditto the Poor.
"Hy kan tell dey is schmot qvestions, dey is makink my head hurt."
    Hoc spatio locantur.

Add a big +1 for Americana by Offspring, and add:

                • Kill Bill Volume 1 Soundtrack
                • NOFX - The War on Errorism
                • Nirvana - Unplugged in New York
                • The Racontuers - Broken Boy Soldier
                • Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of Los Angles
I pray for the strength to change what I can, the inability to change what I can't, and the incapacity to tell the difference -Calvin, Calvin & Hobbes

Being a pessimist and cynical wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't right so often!

                  Are we related somehow?

Speaking of The Eagles, let me add this classic album:

                  Greatest Hits 1971-1975

As far as Fleetwood Mac goes, their Greatest Hits album is really awesome as well.

As is the Stevie Nicks compliation:

Timespace: The Best of Stevie Nicks (I think my copy is almost worn out now.)
Human Resources - the adult version of "I'm telling Mom." - Agent Anthony "Tony" DiNozzo (NCIS)

Hey, DGC, the OP said that greatest hits compilations don't count!

My list, in no particular order:

                    "Dreamboat Annie" by Heart.
                    "Little Queen" by Heart.
                    "Hotel California" by the Eagles.
"Bat Out of Hell" by Meat Loaf.
                    "The Wall" by Pink Floyd.
"Appetite for Destruction" by Guns n' Roses.
                    "Desire Walks On" by Heart.
                    "Body Count" by Body Count.
                    "The Doors" by The Doors.
                    "L.A. Woman" by The Doors.
                    "Roadhouse Blues" by The Doors.
                    "Strange Days" by The Doors.
                    "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac.
"Jagged Little Pill" by Alanis Morrissette.
                    "Tommy" by The Who.
"The Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd.
                    "Otis" by Mojo Nixon.

I still say the three greatest albums ever produced were, in no particular order, "Dreamboat Annie," "The Wall," and "Hotel California." But of course, that is just one fellow's opinion.

                        Loveless - My Bloody Valentine.
If you like swirling, dreamy, beautifully odd music, this is the greatest album of all time. Best played LOUD.
                        Here's a song from the album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DEnwUAzPG4

Also, I have a major crush on Bilinda Butcher (the singer)

Oh, absolutely. Interstella 5555 is simply amazing!

                          So, hm...

David Arkenstone - Quest of the Dream Warrior

                          ELO - Time.

                          ELO - Eldorado.

Yanni - Live at the Acropolis.

Ace of Base - The Sign.

Really, most anything by the ELO or the Moody Blues would fit well here. The two specific ones I named just come to mind the quickest.

                            Let's see...

                            - "Ziltoid the Omniscient" by Devin Townsend. It's a concept album about an alien coming to Earth for the "ultimate cup of coffee" and his fight with Captain Spectacular. Very heavy, lots of great guitar, insane drumkit and a great sense of humour through it all. The kind of album that if you hear just one song it doesn't make sense.

                            - Joe Bonamassa's "Live From Nowhere In Particular". Two CDs chock full of awesome blues rock.

                            - "Octavarium" by Dream Theater. The sound of the album varies quite a bit, from light ballad to nice'n'heavy, but all of it is great.

                            - (I know I'm gonna get flack for this, but) "Let's Face It" by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. I love their sound and I love all the songs on this album.

                            - "Ghost Reveries" by Opeth. Yes, Swedish progressive death metal. Like Dream Theater, their sound varies quite a bit, from light piano music and soft vocals to full-on metal with gut-wrenching 'growl'ing for the vocals... all tied together into a cohesive story (well, near-cohesive... the last song isn't part of the story).
"Kamala the Ugandan Giant" 1950-2020 • "Bullet" Bob Armstrong 1939-2020 • "Road Warrior Animal" 1960-2020 • "Zeus" Tiny Lister Jr. 1958-2020 • "Hacksaw" Butch Reed 1954-2021 • "New Jack" Jerome Young 1963-2021 • "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff 1949-2021 • "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton 1958-2021 • Daffney 1975-2021
