  • Hair advice needed.

I've been trying to grow out my hair for three reasons.

    1) I've had short hair for seven years. I wanted change.
    2) I want to donate to locks of love.
    3) Husband says I cannot do it.

So I had not cut or trimmed my hair since October 31st of last year. The ends were damaged and I was fed up with it. I went off to get a trim and asked the lady if she could please give me LONG LAYERS for a bit more volume because my hair is thick. I also explained I don't wish to devote much time to styling because, quite frankly I have better things to do. She said she understood and went to town.

Now, this lady is a new to me. I just moved 45 minutes from my old neighborhood and I felt it was too long of a drive for a trim. So I 'cheated' on my hair stylist and now I've come to regret it.

There is SOMETHING WRONG with "long layers" if you can fake a BOB when tying up the long layers into a pony tail. The top layer is so short the bottoms flip out in a permanent flippy thing and I am livid. I am upset and I don't know what to do. Everything from the chin down flips out permanently and I am tempted to just get everything cut to match the shortest layer. It would look classier, sleeker and it'd be more manageable but I'd be back to a year ago. -sigh-

And before you ask, I didn't notice the botched up job when I left the salon. The lighting wasn't up to par, she did a quick show of the back and did a good job at adding product to the hair to make the top layer less noticeable. That and I was dumbstruck on how handsome the husband looks with a 'business cut'. RAWR.

Ugh I feel for you.....I have that flippy thing as well....and I HATE it....I'm growing my hair out, and I want to wear it down......but not when it flips, I've been living in ponytails.

Leave it for now, fix it when there's more length.

Deal with the annoying bit for the time being - you have to get past that stage for it to end up long...

I know your hearts in the right place, but I recently read an article that Locks of Love is absolutely overwhelmed with hair donations, and they're asking people to donate money with or instead of hair (too much hair, not enough people to turn it into wigs).

Also a quick FYI to you or anyone who wants to donate to Locks of Love, if you bleach your hair (which most people do if they have highlights, and some people do if they completely color their hair) they can't accept it. The only reason I mention this is because I really wanted to donate a few years back, my hair was nearly long enough and I thought I'd just let it grow out enough to get the required length...till I found that out. I've had my hair colored and highlighted a lot in the last few years and since my hair is very very very dark naturally, this always requires bleach to some extent. So, no donating for me. Just mentioning it since I know a lot of people at least highlight their hair.

Do you have any pics of your current hair style, AnqeiicDemise? Probably once it grows out some it will start to look better, often new hair styles look a lot worse at first than they actually are. I'm sorry the stylist botched the job. If you have any friends in the area where you moved to, maybe ask them if they know any good stylists that they could recommend.

I wouldn't consider my current hair 'virgin' because it has been dyed twice but only with Henna which has no bleaches or anything in it. I had my hair bleached once for high lights about four years ago... never..ever... again.

I got some pictures somewhere. I need to download them to the computer (my wbcam only takes video. The still caption got corrupted.)

I agree with Slytovhand. Though shooting might not be smart.

Wait until you get some length in the layers, and then try to fix it.

Also, when you find a great stylist-unless the distance is insane (my current) or they just up and change careers(my stylist in high school)- you should just stick with them. You never know what will happen when you "cheat".

When I cut my hair in April, the girl who did it gave me three inch layers at the top of my head. You would not believe how bad it looked if I tried to put it in a pony. So out of frustration with that, and the girl who cut my hair at the start of May. I went to my new stylist and told her to cut it all off. Not only was she able to make it look good without totally killing my length, she doesn't automatically straighten my hair. She actually encourages my curl.

It's very annoying to have curl hair cut in a straight style. Most stylists do it because straightening the hair to cut it makes it easier to cut. However, once my hair goes back to normal it's just scary.

I hope you can get your hair where you want it again.
