    Hmmm - crap!

I've got a lawyers letter demanding payment from a company I dealt with 2 years ago.

Thing is, I'm about 99% sure I paid them everything, and the letters they sent me (statements) indicated that I didn't owe them a cent, as well... you know - balance = zero!

Naturally, said statements are somewhat... gone! Especially now as I'm throwing stuff out for my move.

I've already rung the lawyers and told them I haven't dealt with that lot in over a year and a half (turns out it was back in Jan/Feb 07), and I didn't owe them anything - send it back to them to check.

I've checked my bank statements, and found 2 payments (yay!!), but not for the amount they're seeking... (well, the ones I could get my hands on in such short notice - can't access the others online - it won't go back that far).

    hmmmm ..... annoying!
When I said "From my research", what I actually meant to say was "Made shit up" - from a thottbot thread

strange the company didn't contact you first. Call the company and ask for all statements they have, match them up with your bank records from that time and see if anything is left over.

I got one from a collection agency about five years back. I wrote back and requested the documentation of that debt; adding that if the debt was genuine and I recognized it, I would send in the payment immediately. I have yet to hear from this agency.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!
