  • Got bad news about my little dog yesterday

I found out my little dog Broc is in the advanced stages of Glaucoma and is rapidly losing his vision. Poor little dog, he loves to run outside and play frisbee, soon he won't be able to. He's getting treated and is on 2 different medications right now. Our vet is excellent and I trust him completely. He's not that old... he's about 3 years old.

I'm sitting in a dark room with him right now. He doesn't like being out in the open because he's already lost so much vision.

I'm sorry, sweet. Same happened to my mom's little yorkie, but not due to glaucoma. She would walk around and around in circles, fearing she'd bump into furniture. So sad. But what a joy pets bring! Makes me wish I could have a little dog in my apt.

*offers hugs* It's awful when pets are so sick. You want to make them all better, since they bring you such joy.

Hopefully since he is youg he can adapt.
My uncle has a dog born with no eyes. She has memoried the layout of the house and even outside. She is a sweet and happy dog. You call her and she will come running from upstairs and not bump into a thing. Even outside she has gotten used to where the porch is and the steps.

Just treat him well, give him lots of love and he can possibly adapt and still be a happy baby

            Poor little guy. That sucks.

            So sorry.

I'm sorry to hear that, but it's not catastrophic. I've known several dogs who were completely blind, they learn to get on fine.

Dogs don't rely on their sight nearly as much as we do. On a good day, their sight is not great. They rely on theirhearing and sense of smell more. They adapt, and you adapt too.

They get a little confused if you rearrange the furniture on them. Friend of mine who had a blind dog just sent him to Camp Grandma's whenever she had a big party that required her to re arrange. All those extra legs and the sofa being in the wrong place were tough on him. But other than that, you'd hardly know he couldn't see.

Poor pup....must be scared right now.

Animals are AMAZING adapters, he'll adjust. I can completely understand being worried and sad. One of my cats lost an eye to felibe herpes, and while he still needs to adjust some punces due lack of depth perception, he gets by fine. There is a *slight* chance he could flare up again and lose the other eye....

Just give the pup love and belly scratches, it'll be tough in the beginning, but you guys will get through it

You're right, it's not catastrophic. But here's the thing, the dog is hyper-active and his favorite thing in the world to do is chase down a fucking frisbee. So, he will no longer be able to do his *favorite* thing in the world if he goes completely blind.

"sorrys" and "buts" in the same sentence make for poor empathy.

I'm sorry that Broc and you are going through this. I know that you're upset about the situation. I don't think anyone here is trying to minimize the significance of these events, just to point out that things aren't hopeless. You came here for support, and that's what we're offering.

I'm pretty sure that they make loads of noisy toys (frisbees included). Especially as dogs have awesome hearing and smelling. Just like a human who has gone blind, there will be a period of adjustment, and then he'll adapt. Looking at the negative side is not going to help your puppy.

That sucks, FL. But, like the others have said, he'll adapt to his condition.

For example, when I was in college, one of my friends had a dog with only 3 legs. She'd been hit by a car, and lost the leg Didn't stop her from chasing her ball, or attempting to jump onto the kitchen table

Also, I once had a deaf cat. "Snow," was totally deaf. But, she was a very sweet and playful kitty. Usually, she'd know when I'd come home. How? Well, she couldn't hear the garage door going up. But, she could feel the vibration through the floor!

My dog likes frisbee too. I don't get off until midnight, but he still wants to go out and play in the dark. I can tell that he can't really see it at night, but he can definitely hear it whiz through the air, the thump as it hits the grass, and then he sniffs until he gets an exact location on it. So I think your dog should be able to still play too. Don't stop playing fetch games just because he can't see.
