Maybe the definition of "celebrity" is being expanded as well. I generally would not consider the former Governor-General to be a celebrity, but apparently Wikipedia does.

"Person of note" possibly? Considering I don't think I've ever heard the name before, I don't think he did much in office.

She's not nearly as well known, and I only just found out via Wikipedia, but Lorena Gale, who played Elosha on BSG, passed away a week or so ago.

I hadn't realized she'd been in so many shows. She was one of those faces that kept popping up, but wasn't an automatic "oh, I know who that is!"

ETA: And Jean Hugel, the patriarch of the Hugel family (Alsatian winemaking family, one of the largest wineries in the region) passed earlier this month. To be honest, though, that was just a matter of time. He'd been in failing health for a few years.

He performed the tasks required of the position, but there was nothing that could be considered particularly special or memorable. For the record, I don't think that "person of note" is the same as "celebrity".

I agree. When I think "celebrity," I think of lead actors or prominent TV personalities or sports heroes.

At any rate, I'm saddened when I hear of anyone's death, but the emotional connect is more or less, depending on the person & situation. I can totally bawl at the death of someone I don't know personally (victim of a heinous situation), while I've had small reaction to some reletives' deaths.

And Fred Travalena. I used to watch him on many talk shows and game shows in the 70's.

I don't think so either, but it's Wikipedia. It's not exactly a paragon of precise language usage. They could very well be lumping everyone in to one category, poorly termed "celebrity."

I was really actually sad that Billy Mays died. From what I saw on Pitchmen he was a really nice guy, and he did sell some really cool stuff (we've got several bottles of Mighty Mend-It sitting around). I kind of got excited whenever I heard his voice come on TV, cause I thought, "What cool thing is he gonna show now?"

Is that really the issue here? Yes, historically speaking Walter Cronkite is much more important. But both were notable people, and more importantly, both had families and friends who are mourning their loss. For Mays, long before his time was up.

why get into an argument about which was greater?

We really don't need yet another rehash of the "who's more famous and worthy of a celebrity title" argument.

Besides, most of the deaths being mentioned are already being discussed in their own threads.
