  • Walking to the west coast

If someone wanted to walk to the west coast then how long a walk would it take? Say you start out walking from south central Pennsylvania & walked all the way to Long Beach, California, how long would you have to walk taking into consideration that you stop somewhere to rest & eat & such?
I'm not planning to do this but it's something I've always wondered about.

It would take me about two minutes - to decide to go to the airport instead!

Don't think they factor in eating and sleeping...

          Barring blisters, if you maintained an average of 30 miles a day (3 MPH for 10 hrs/day) that's 88 days (2664 miles / 30).

Hasn't this been done before? I seem to recall reading something somewhere about a person or two completing this task.

It has - Peter Jenkins wrote A Walk Across America, detailing his experiences on his walk. It took him five years; along the way, he got married, and by the time he and his wife finished the walk, she was a few months pregnant. Very interesting book, and he's thinking of doing another walk, now.

As someone who currently resides in Long Beach California I have to ask the obvious question:

"Why in God's name would you WANT to walk here?"

Most people are trying to get OUT of California, not come here! Trust me, this is not a place you want to be right about now...

That's the pace/duration I was figuring on too. Gotta love the goggling though:

"Use caution – This route may be missing sidewalks or pedestrian paths."

Be interesting - the longest shot I saw was 60 miles (through Kansas no less) so you'd be seeing something new often.

the AT takes about 5-7 months, and that's 2175 miles.

'course, that's through woods and over mountains.....but its a rough idea.

Full Appalachian Trail supported men's record is 47 days by Andy Thompson. Men's unsupported is 60 days by Ward Leonard.

Guessing that's a bit hardier than our three miles an hour supposition though

Back OT, I think it'd be really interesting to walk coast to coast

You should read "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson. Fun read, if you're into stuff about the Appalachian Trail.
