  • JFK Airport Advice

I need some advice from anyone that's gone through JFK a few times, please!

Our plane gets in at 4:54pm local time at terminal 4 (we're coming from ABQ). Our flight to Edinburgh leaves at 7:55pm local time from terminal 3.

Is that going to be plenty of time to get through everything or are we going to have to hussle?

I was only there once, and was worried I'd be late for my flight. Had about 30 minutes to get my boarding pass, security, and onto the plane.

    I managed in 15 minutes.

So.... I think 3 hours should be plenty of time. For any airport, really. Unless you've got a ton of checked luggage or something. I only had carry-ons.

      Re, KJFK

I frequently fly into & out of JFK, so, i'll chime in here. A layover of about 3 hours should be plenty of time to reclaim & recheck bags, and do all the other things needed between flights. That being said... don't f*** about. Do everything you need to as soon as you arrive, and get your arse to your departure terminal, to be sure you don't miss your flight. Also, don't necessarily go by the in flight pre-arrival announcement regarding connection gates, as that information is often out of date. Double check your connecting gate once on the ground.

      Enjoy your flight!

My personal rule of thumb is pretend you have to hussle no matter how much time you have. I'd rather get it all done early and have a long wait than get there and find out there's something that might delay me.

Terminal 3/4 should be enough time to do everything you need to do, even with JFK.

Keep in mind though, with it being summer and the heat-related thunderstorms are cropping up out of nowhere, which wreak havoc on the bigger airports like JFK, O'Hare and the Washington DC area.

Count on there being a bit of a delay, and don't dawdle and you'll be fine.

            Thanks guys!

I kind of figured that would be enough time. I had just seen some other comments about "it took me hours".

Each of us is only going to have one checked bag and weren't planning on standing around poking our butts between terminals!

And here I am stressing out about things that I have no control over....along with the 15 bazillion things that I still need to do running through my head constantly. I haven't slept decently since last Friday.

One thing that happened in JFK that never happened in another airport was they didn't allow me and mom to use the elevator. Only if you are in a wheelchair. Mom is used to being allowed to just get on an elevator, since she has trouble getting on escalators. She has bad knees and she is old.

And the bathrooms are horrible. No toliet paper and shit on the side of the toliets. Ok, that can be a one time thing or just unusual, but I'm not going to JFK again if I can help it.

Oh, I encounter that in the bathroom in the front of the store at the Wally World near me on a regular basis.
