  • Good thing it's a weekend...

I am sitting here, half asleep still, and running on only 3 hours of sleep (give or take...mostly take).

    Kids and cats!!!

I got my granddaughter all tucked in for the night and was finally relaxing on the couch when, around midnight, the evening was interrupted by a shrill scream coming from her room.
She was standing in her crib and screaming in terror while looking at her bedroom window.

This had happened before, a week or so previous. That time, her window was open just a crack to let some fresh air into her room. I had wondered if a squirrel or bird had hit against the screen and scared her.

I held her for a while, but she was wound up and wouldn't go back to sleep, and she wouldn't go back in her room.

My daughter came home from her shift at the bar, and it was after 1 am by that point.

She kept attempting to put the baby back in her crib, but she would just scream.

At one point, she put her down, and she was quiet, so my daughter went outside, only to come running back in to inform me my cat was outside!

I have no idea how the heck he got out. The only thing I can think of is that there is a fairly large hole in the screen in the baby's room, so maybe it was Harper going through the window that woke her and scared her. This morning, I noticed cat hair on the edges of the frayed screen around the hole.

(My daughter had a cat in late 2007. He wreaked havoc on my screens, and I haven't got around to repairing all of them. I did manage to get one fixed by my friend and coworker the fall of 2007 before he died. He was going to do all of them for me, but then he got sick last spring, and then my hubby died, and that was that. Screens were the least of my worries...)

I normally only leave her window open a crack, just enough for air, but not enough for the cat to get his head through.
Somebody had slid it across over halfway.

The window in my room also has a small hole, but, again, it's not open enough for him to get through, and it's been like that for weeks and he hasn't bothered with it before.

Anyway, while he is in the house, Harper will come to me when I call him with no hesitation. Somehow, the freedom of being outside makes him silly, and he kept running from me and wouldn't come when I called.

He didn't go far. He just hung around in my carport and flowerbed, and under the cedar hedge at the back.

I was finally able to coax him out with some tasty, fragrant morsels of cat food.

I got him back in the house, but then I worried all night because I had no idea at that point how he had managed to get out, so I was afraid he would run again once I slept.

It was well after 3 am when the baby finally seemed to be quieting down, so I drifted off, only to be awakened again by her screaming.

This went on pretty much the whole rest of the night morning, and finally, about 7 am, I got up because it was obvious I wasn't going to get a whole lot of sleep.
I honestly don't know how much sleep my granddaughter has had.

We are supposed to be going to a birthday party for her cousin.

Her mother is heading to work on very little sleep as well.

This should be a fun day for all of us.

    Like I said...kids and cats!

I don't know how your screens are designed, but would it be possible to flip them around so that the bits with holes in them are at the top of the window where it would be much harder for the cat to get out through them?

I may try that, but I think I'll call the local screen repair place and be done with it.

I noticed the baby is covered in mosquito and bug bites, too, so they're obviously getting in through the screen.

I don't know what to do about the waking up screaming, though, because I have been up since about 4 am with her again.

Well, if she's covered in bug bites, maybe she's crying about that?

And since she's in her crib when it happens, she's starting to form an association between the crib at night and being bitten.

I'm grasping at straws, but it might be something to check out.

I had a night like that last Friday--kept wakimg up every hour due to all kinds of things. Proceeded to work a 14-hour day on Saturday. All I can tell you is that coffee is your friend. As far as screens go, it's unsightly, but maybe some masking tape could be a temporary solution?

Children sometimes go through a period when they're small of night terrors. My older son didn't, but my younger son had a handful of nights where he screamed and I would find him sitting bolt upright in bed, eyes open, but not really seeming awake. I'd help him back down and pull up his blanket, and get him back to sleep, but it was a bit easier because his bed was still in our bedroom, so I could get to him quickly.

Since your granddaughter is waking up, it's more likely it's a nightmare, and when she woke and saw something she didn't recognize scrabbing around her window, she became terrified.
