  • *sigh* Here I go

Tomorrow, I have an interview at a sandwich shop (not Subway). What makes this interesting is that it's for an assistant manager position.

I have supervisor experience and have done the assistant manager role before. I just...don't know. I think I have a snowball's chance in hell. But I'm going to try anyway. I don't have a lot of options.

Those who will, please wish me luck. I need it

Many things that shouldn't happen often do. I could cite various historic events, my own life, whatever. But just because you think something doesn't have an ice cube's chance in Phoenix doesn't mean it can't happen, ya know.

So drop the "I doubt this will happen" attitude. Seriously. Go in there with a "I can't wait to see what they have waiting for me at my new job!" attitude. Walk in like you are meant to be there, and be thrilled to see your new digs.

The right attitude can make a world of difference, not just in interviews, but in most parts of life. Mind you....so can the wrong one.

Jester's right. My own current job I think makes a wonderful example of what the attitude does during the interview.

I'd never held a job as a developer before. Never. I'd done the work as part of my systems administration work, but never held the job title. I figured there had to be tons I didn't know. Still, I put my resume out there, and got this interview.

Now, the recruiting company that sent me to my current job sent others in for the same position. I spoke with the recruiter before my interview. She told me that the person who had interviewed about an hour before me reported that the interview was hard, they were sweating bullets during it, the guy was asking seriously tough, deeply technical questions. In other words, in my mind, the interview was over before it began. I was not going to get this job.

So, I decided to have fun with it. Pick up what I could from the interviewer, and at least practice my interviewing skills. Even though the job was already well and truly blown, I could at least have some fun learning what to do to get the next one.

Now, toss in some other tidbits: Phone interview. I was being interrupted during the phone interview by my current job, which had me helping install and configure a T1 line, and dealing with a real jerk of a boss while doing so. Despite all that, I was still having fun finding out what I needed to find out for my next interview.

The interview started at 2pm, and was over at 3:30pm. By 4:30pm, I had accepted the job offer that came my way.

I'm still flabbergasted by this. I was not supposed to get this job. My chances were somewhere between none and "yeah, right!". And yet, I got the job. To this day, I think it was my deciding to have fun with it that tipped the scales.

My advice to you: Since you know you have no chance, have fun practicing your interview skills. Enjoy the idea that, if nothing else, you're learning what you need to get offered a job at your next interview.

It might work for you, too.

Things didn't go as badly as I feared. I made the guy laugh a couple of times. He liked my resume and I told him distance doesn't matter to me (as it doesn't). I was worried I looked unprofessional when I saw that he was in jean shorts .

He's supposed to be calling back those he's interested in for second interviews.
