  • Not exactly what I was hoping for...

Ok, so it's been a pretty rough week, all things considered. Craziness at work, house-sitting, house cleaning, fighting off oncoming depression attack, etc. But hey, my birthday's coming up, and then I have a silent retreat this weekend at one of my favorite places in the world up in Santa Barbara. So I'm holding up.

I come home tonight, very tired and a little discouraged, and there's a box on the doorstep! It's from my parents, it must be birthday stuff! Oooh, it's heavy! Cool, did they get me books?

    *opens box*

Oh. Um...Well. It's all of my cake decorating supplies. From high school. And a card with a check for $50, and a note to cash it asap because they're trying to close the account. Ok...

I mean, I can use the cake supplies (though I'm throwing half of it out--sprinkles dating back 10 years?? NOT going to use those), but...I already owned them. I'm glad to have them back, but...would it have killed them to toss in one new item? Even just a clearance shelf book on space or something...

They're great parents, but...I really could've used something a little more personal right now.

When presents happen from my parents, I've taken to requesting specific items if I don't feel like getting cash, little things that I never get around to buying for myself, like a new bathrobe or a comfy pair of slippers. They used to give me books, but they stopped when they started having to call me to make sure I didn't own it.

Money is nice, but it doesn't feel the same as a thing.

If I were you, I'd go out and spend it on something you don't need, and maybe not books either, fun as they are. Is there something you've been wanting for a while, but haven't gotten around to buying? Get that. Get bubble bath, or a ticket to a show, or whatever, just treat yourself so something outside of the usual, change it up a bit.

    Also, happy birthday.

Happy Birthday! Hey, at least they sent a check. Isn't it the thought that counts?
