  • Nurse Betty in Key West

So as some of you know, I recently got involved romantically with my friend Nurse Betty, who lives back in Phoenix. Which, of course, is not the easiest thing, as I live in Key West, only about 2600 miles down the road from her.

But it's not all just a phone thing. Nurse Betty came to Key West for the Fourth of July weekend, and we were both very excited about seeing each other again, as we really didn't have that much time together when this whole thing started when I was in Phoenix in April.

As we counted down the days till her arrival, we were both a bit nervous, to be honest. We had no idea how this was going to be, especially since so much had changed so quickly, what with us having been friends for so many years.

Well, she didn't have the best experience getting here (several flight delays/near missed connections/lost luggage), but when she finally walked into the terminal, I was standing there with a bouquet of yellow roses (her favorite) for her. It was obvious she and I both felt a little awkward, but we gave each other a big hug, and due to her harrowing trip, she immediately stepped outside to grab a smoke while I waited for her bag....which, as noted above, never came. So, rather than going straight home as she had hoped, we had to go to the airline counter and fill out forms, blah blah blah, and hope that her luggage would arrive the next day and be delivered to us. Luckily, it was.

Finally, we did get home, and I cooked her dinner as she relaxed (I'm good like that), making her spaghetti with my homemade sauce. We had planned on staying in that night, since we knew she would probably be tired from the journey (three planes, four airports!). Due to all that happened, she was even more tired than we had expected. So we had some time to eat and get to know each other again, and slowly the awkwardness went away, and we rediscovered the magic that had happened in April all over again.

Throughout the weekend, we had a blast: a gourmet dinner cruise the night of the Fourth, with great food and an awesome view of the fireworks from the water just off the pier they were being shot off from; a drag show that was downright hilarious; time at the pool bar with my friend Little Red; the magic bar, with both myself and my friend Frank performing; hitting The Bar and other places for some great food; cooking her breakfast one morning; and making her chocolate covered strawberries, thanks to a suggestion from my former head chef. It was, without question, a very magical few days and nights. Nurse Betty met many of my friends, and everyone seemed to like her, and she really enjoyed herself. Sure, there was much drunkenness on both our parts, and some fireworks (not just the kind in the sky), both positive and negative....after all, she is pretty much crazy. And I mean that as both a compliment and otherwise. She drives me nuts much of the time, but honestly, I adore this girl, and even with all the drama--and there's plenty--I can't really picture myself with anyone else. (Unless, that is, Anna Paquin comes knocking. But, ya know, both Nurse Betty and I DO have our "celebrity lists," so that's all good.)

The pictures below are a sampling of our amusing weekend. Nurse Betty, of course, is the good-looking one....I am the goofy-looking dweeb.

And no, the guy in the last picture is NOT me....he is the "Key West Overdressed Nudist."

Okay, Jester, just so you know... I'm jealous of you... so jealous, my eyes are now glowing bright green!

Well... except for when she goes into that "crazy whack-job" mode... that part, you can keep!

Jester, I am so happy that you and Nurse Betty had fun. That weekend was a pretty magical one for me as well, so I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm also glad to have had part in hunting for plane tickets for Betty. The pictures are great, and you're right, she is beautiful.

One of my friends here in CS told me that I look stoned in all the pictures. She conjectured that it was probably because I was drunk in all of them. While I may well have been drinking a fair amount that weekend, I do have to point out that I look stoned all the time. Ironically, I don't smoke up....it's just the way my eyes are.
