  • Any Welders Out There?

I've decided that I really need to go back to school and I find Welding very tempting. However, I'm female and I was looking at a forum that said that the job opportunities for women in welding were not good because of sexism.

So, I guess my question here is twofold...is this true or did I just stumble across some bitter hags? and what can I expect jobwise in welding? I'm sorry, that's really general. I guess I'd just like to hear some experiences about the work environment/job description from welders?

As a female heavy duty diesel mechanic and before that I worked as an an engineer on the ships, I have welding training among other things. I love welding and creating useful things. Both careers for me have been very heavily male influenced and I do have to say this you do encounter some that are very sexist unfortunately. It seems to be mainly the older generation that is this way as they never really worked with women or pictured them in this type pf job but you also encounter a lot that think it's cool that a woman does this and are very accepting towards you. The shop I'm in now is great for that. I think that if this is what you want to do, go for it and have fun doing it.

A very good friend of mine is a welder by trade, who's also worked on many ships.

If you'd like, I can ask him your questions, and get the info back to you.
Or, if you prefer, I can try to get you two connected via email, and let it go from that.

      It's up to you.

I've checked out my local community college and they have a program for welding that offers an Associate's. They had profiles of students who have been through their program and there were quite a few women. I was also encouraged to see several articles on other sites that showed that in my city, at least, some of the companies actively seek women welders.

The other thing I'm kinda looking at would be machining, die cutting, CAM, that sort of thing.
