  • Oh great....

I know I'm going to sound like a complete asshole when I say this but...

The people who live behind me just got a pit bull puppy.

I know - nothing against the breed but here you can count the reputable breeders on one hand while you'd need the entire population to count all the irresponsible breeders out here.

I know these people wouldn't have the money to go to someone reputable so I have to assume it's a puppy mill or BYB puppy meaning that I need to be on my full guard when I'm outside with my dogs (especially Kiri).

Considering that they were known to just let their last dog run all over (whom they claim they took back to the shelter since the grandson was allergic to dogs), I can see problems coming up in 6-12 months.

I still have the pepper spray from the last time we had issues but I'll need to get another bull horn.

Irresponsible pet owners piss me off. I have a pit. (Sorta. He lives at home with my family, while I'm in school. not gonna bring a pit to live in an apartment complex...). Papers on him and everything, documenting his breeding, etc.

He's the sweetest, most cowardly dog you'll ever meet, and I lurves him to death, but it still irks me when I tell people I have a pit and get the reactions I do. "GASP!! How horrid! How many people has he attacked?! Why would you want an animal like that??"

Raise them right, and they're not the violent, fighting dogs you read about.

However, your neigbors sound like irresponsible fuckheads, so good luck with that. And perhaps a bit more pepper spray wouldn't be amiss.

Telling me that a dog (any dog) has papers means nothing from me - who are the papers from i more important.

I know a pit breeder a few towns over and a well know GSD expert is also quite active in the pit world - we both know great breeders who breed great dogs.

Luckily, the breeders that my friend and I know are responsible and know what needs to be done to help the breed. They're trying to breed out poor temperaments (especially in the bitches) and improve the god part of the temperaments. One of these breeders had an issue with his dogs getting stolen so he had to get a SchH3 trained malinois. (I actually think that is funny).

But - people tend to forget - despite popular beliefs, pits are TERRIERS. Terriers are hunting dogs - traditionally used to hunt down rodents and smaller nuisances (badgers etc..).

They hunt - it's programmed in them (like asking a collie or a shepherd not to try to herd). People who own terriers need to realize this and act with the dog and train it accordingly and sadly, especially here, most do not. Most get them as an aggression dog (sorry, I won't use protection or guard since I've seen NONE who would fit that). Every dog is different but you need to treat them all differently based on what their basic and instinctive wiring is set to.

Be proactive. Make friends with the puppy NOW. Some pork rib bones will work wonders.

Honestly? Know nothing about his papers, my stepdad handled all of that when we took him. He's a family dog, but when I go home, he's glued to my side, so sorta "my dog" sort of not. his previous owners moved overseas for an army thing, my family took him in. Haven't regretted it since. I know he's a hunter. A few birds and mice have discovered that as well, but after all the horror stories we've heard about pit bulls it's just hard to see him as vicious as they're depicted. He's sweet, patient (My 4 year old nephew climbs all over him, and he thinks it's great fun)

I personally think he's trained well. (Freely admit I'm not a dog professional, if you will, so this is just my opinion and observations) Sit, stay, lie down and all that, but he stops barking when told, will go in his kennel on command, doesn't jump on people, and knows that if someone's sitting on the floor during a family gathering with a plate of food, it's off limits. but like I said before he's rather cowardly. he HATES weather. when he has his outside time, he refuses to step off the porch if it's raining, or sleeting or snowing, or too windy, etc, etc. He'll stand on the edge with me telling him he has to go pee, and stare up at me with a look on his face that says "You're kidding, right...?"

I also know he's capable of great acts of destruction, and can destroy a toy in less than 5 minutes, literally taking it to shreds while simply "playing". I know it and respect it, and my family acted accordingly when raising him.

Sorry, long winded and babbly tonight. Not much sleep to go on.

I miss my doggy now... >.>

          That's my baby!

            Adorable pit

I'm a tried and true cat person (duh), but I love pits, and hate that irresponsible people (like the OP's neighbors, who lets their dog, any dog, run around??) can ruin a breed's reputation.

Every pit I've met has been super-friendly rescue pits, and I'd trust them more than any lil yippy dog
