  • Please! for the love of peanut butter, let me get some sleep at night!

My daughter, Child Rum, loves to crawl into my bed in the middle of the night. I do start her off sleeping in her own room, but sometime in the wee hours of the night, she comes into our room, plops in between me & Mr. Rum and goes back to sleep.

For those who don't know, Mr. Rum is a very large man (5 feet 10 inches and 460+ pounds). Child rum is a little over 4 feet tall and 60 pounds. I'm 5'3" and 280 pounds. We have a Queen-sized bed. When Child Rum is in the middle, I'm squished to the edge of my side of the bed and I've been known to wake up with half of me on my night stand (which is right next to my bed) and half of me on the bed.

For the past 3 mornings, I've woken up with a horrendous pain in my neck and my shoulders from the way I've been sleeping lately.

That's just part of the reason I don't sleep well at night.

The second part is because of my female cat, Kyra.

A little background on Kyra: She's a short-haired orange & white female cat. She's (by my estimate) 7 years old. We got her when she was 7 months old (the estimate of the shelter we got her from). According to the little information card that was on the cage, we found out that she had been owned by a family who was living in an apartment, and the family left without taking her with them. She was in the apartment, by herself for a week or 2 before another family came to take over the apartment, and they turned the cat over to the shelter.

Kyra is what my sister calls a "needy kittty". She's always meowing to let you know she's around, and she's constantly wanting to be petted. She'll bump your leg, your arm, lick you, etc., until you give in and pet her. She does this to me when I'm getting ready for bed. She does this in the middle of the night, when Child Rum gets into our bed, and I'm rearranging the covers and then going back into the bed.

    I need my sleep.

Short of leaving Child & Mr. Rum in the Queen bed and me moving to Child Rum's bed for the remainder of the night, I'm at wit's end.

sorry, no real ideas, only commiseration. Best I can come up with is either "separate beds," "king sized bed," or your idea. However, I do know what it's like to get your sleep disturbed for various reasons, so *big hugs* for ya.

I have a cat like that. Baxter is a bit "needy" at times. He'll meow for a good 15-20 minutes when I get home from work...begging me to pet him. Once petted, he'll go sleep...until I try to do work on the computer. Then he'll sit on the floor, meow, and get bugged when I don't let him on my lap. But, what really annoys me, is that he'll get into bed with me. Not so annoying in itself...but what he's been doing is. That is, he'll get right in my face with his whiskers, and then chomps on my ear Not enough to draw blood, but enough to get him chased out of the room

            Thanks - I almost broke Rule #1!

            Thanks for the well wishes.

I'm thinking I'm just going to have to start walking Child Rum back to her room when she comes in.

My oldest son used to do that and I woke up feeling just as horrid. I finally told him that he could come into our room BUT he had to bring his pillow/ blanket and sleep on the floor.

That worked out well for us- just have to be careful to not step on the kiddo in the morning. At first it was fun, like "camping" he said. Eventually, the camping thrill wore off and he moved permnantly back into his own bed.

This will be your best bet in the long run. You will feel better and so will Child Rum. It will only take a few nights at most of you consistently walking her back to her own bed before she'll begin to stay there. But the main thing is CONSISTENCY, CONSISTENCY, CONSISTENCY. She'll get it and you'll get a good night's rest.

                  Take care.

Here I go again thinking. See what you do Child Rum?? You make me think. I can't decided which is sillier, Chikld rum for her fun antics or me for actually trying to think.

The two ideas that I had were both offered already. Either walk her back to her own room until she decides to stay in her own bed, or allow her to make a bed at the foot of your bed. If she decides to make the bed at the foot of your bed, don't ler her get in the bed with you. Remind her that she has to take one choice or another. Either her bed or the floor at the foot of yours. I say the foot of the bed because it's safer and she;s less likely to get stepped on if someone forgets that she's sleeping there. My son slept at the foot of my bed for a long time. Then one night he just decided it was time to go back to his bed.

We got up at 4:48 AM this morning. *yawn*

She had to go potty and decided "No sleep for me!"

Shpepper - I'm sorry Child Rum made you think. She makes me think too. Isn't it terrible!?

I might try the walking her back to her room theory. There have been a few nights she hasn't come into our room until Mr. Rum's alarm clock goes off (and it's really loud) and she bounds in the bed, snuggles next to me and sleeps for another hour or so.

Come to think of it ... I think we had completely worn her out the night before.

My mom thinks she's having nightmares or that she has to go potty. I'm not sure. There's been a few times, her eyes are completely closed and she walks in, or if her eyes are open, she gets in and is immediately asleep again. Could she be sleepwalking? But why would she sleepwalk only to Mommy and Daddy's bedroom?

ETA: I think I'm going to have to get a new pillow or not use a pillow at all. Went back to sleep at 7 AM after putting Child Rum back to sleep in her own bed. I got to sleep on my pillow for 3 hours. And my neck still hurts! I took 2 Bayer Asprin, and it's feeling better. WHEW.

It's ok. She more than makes up for it with her delightful outlook on life.

Yes, but her outlook seems to be (as of right now): Me, me, and of course, me!

The pillow definitely has to go. I need a new one, but the one I really want is a specialty pillow and it costs $60!

I think one of the reasons I'm so reluctant to make her sleep entirely in her own bed is because I like to wake up before she does and watch her sleep. She's a beautiful angel when she's sleeping. Mr. Rum says I'm too sentimental and he doesn't understand that.

Oh, and Shpepper, you might like what she did yesterday: She took my lettuce crisper, put it on her head, and declared it was her space helmet!

That made me laugh right out loud. I do love it. I can just see it too.

Have you asked your doctor about getting an rx for that pillow ? Maybe because you use the machine, you can get insurance to help pay for it.
