I hear that forest fires have reached the transmitting towers for most of the LA TV and radio stations. Are any of those stations off the air yet???

For TV it's supposed to only affect the broadcast signals. If it's a channel carried on cable it should not be affected.

All my radio stations are fine, dunno about TV.

The cloud outside is crazy, as you can see from my photo. I can't smell it here, but the light has that weird orange tint from the ash, and the sunset was spectacular.

Wildfires are just one of the reasons why I could never live in California, along with the threat of earthquakes and a hopelessly fucked state government.

The beaches must sure be pretty though. I wouldn't mind visiting some other part of California that isn't Fresno or Bakersfield or Yosemite, because I've seen those before.

I spent the first years of my life in SoCal. I remember going to high school in Rancho Santa Margarita and having to duck down to see anything because of all the smoke coming from near Camp Pendleton. For some reason, they didn't cancel school even though you could barely see the hand in front of your face for all the smoke.

I used to be so scared that the hills by my house (By Irvine Spectrum for people in SoCal) would go up in flames and destroy everything.

How is it that so many of us raised in SoCal ended up here in WA? I was raised in San Clemente. Right by the north gate to Pendelton. It was at my back fence. I remember the fires too. Had some friends who lost their house but not the playhoues in the back yard. Weird stuff.

Ditto. I might like to visit California, but I wouldn't want to live there. One of my aunts has lived there for at least 30 years, and I don't know how she does it.

This last time that San Diego caught fire, my dad had been evacuated to some place where they were putting all the Oceanside people. I was really scared for him...

It's just a matter of what you're willing to trade.

Great culture, access to arts and opera, fun food, great weather, and an atmosphere where anything is welcome

                vs

a few earthquakes that usually don't break much
a few fires that aren't likely to get *your* house
a few mudslides that aren't likely to get your house either

I still love it here. I'd MUCH rather have fires and earthquakes than tornadoes.

Aside from the opera and the great weather (year 'round anyway), you just described where I live. I love it here, and I wouldn't trade it for a bigger city. KC may have more culture and arts, but also a lot more crime. I'll pass (and drive in on the weekends).

Tornadoes aren't that likely, even here in the land of Oz. We had one close call about a year ago, but nothing too scary.

I kinda miss the earthquakes. I rather liked the small ones. Not the big damaging ones but the small ones that you have to call 5 people and ask if they felt the earthquake before it really happened.

I visited LA once, 15 months ago, and don't plan on going back anytime soon. Too much sprawl and traffic.
