  • The Roommate Carousel goes round and round...

...round and round, round and round...the Roommate Carousel goes round and round, in this tropical town.....

*sigh* Here we go again. I am sure many of you are familiar with some of the struggles I have had with roommates, most recently with the Deadbeat musician (who is currently still in jail, by the way). While my one roommate Mr. Anti-Social has been as solid as a roommate can be (eight years now), the Third Roommate Situation just has been aggravating as all hell. After Deadbeat, we finally got a guy in, Tools, who not only is neat and clean and responsible and pays his rent and bills, but he pays his rent and bills EARLY. Like, a week before they're due early. And he is very quiet, doesn't cause trouble, and is about as good a roommate as one could ask for.

So, why am I bitching? Because Tools gave us notice today that he will be moving out at the end of September. It seems he found a place that is more convenient for him location-wise, without roommates, for the same price he is paying here. Can't say I blame him.

And now that throws me and Mr. Anti-Social back into the hopper, with no idea what kind of roommate we are going to get this time. We are hoping to avoid unreliable ones by insisting on a deposit, but 1. even with a deposit, there is no guaranteeing that a future roommate won't get unreliable down the road, or arrested, or whatever; and 2. a lot of people in this town, especially at this, the slowest time of the year, might not necessarily be able to come up with a deposit.

So commence the slamming of the head into the desk, the wall, the door, the floor, or any other hard unforgiving surface.

So....anyone reliable and employed feel like relocating to Key West?

How about you and Anti Social come to Minnesota? We're in the same boat at the end of this month.

Nice idea. Won't work. Here's why:

--When I leave Key West, I am heading to Phoenix.
--Mr. Anti-Social does not want to leave Florida.
--We have a lease through July 31.
      --I hate the cold.
      --Mr. Anti-Social hates the cold.
--Minnesota has some serious cold. And don't tell me "it's not that cold." You people plug in your freakin' cars in the winter to keep them from freezing up, and I consider anything below 70 to be chilly.

      Thanks anyway, though.

On the upside, at least your current third roommate gave you adequate notice that he was leaving. I mean, I'm sure you've had, or at least heard of, people who just up and take off without even telling anyone. A friend of mine had a roommate once who did that. My friend went out of town for a weekend and when he got back, all of his roommate's stuff had been packed up and was gone. His room was empty. Apparently he moved to California (from Wisconsin) and never told his roommate (my friend.) My friend was pissed.

I'd love to, but A) I'm not getting enough hours to pay my rent as it is, and B) I don't think I'm up for the commute.

Thank you Jester for reminding me how grateful I am for my current roommates... all very stable... all very interesting (the household makeup is 5 male, one female, 4 gay, 2 straight, 3 wiccan, one deist, 2 umm agnostic I think... and everyone is in a relationship with another roommate).

I'd love to move in, Jester, except I can't. Because, you know, 19, waiting a year before college, have trouble adjusting to new things metally.

Now that is a nice roommate situation.

                Especially all the gay.

Not planning on moving there, as I don't think there's a university in the Keys. However, it's high on the list of places I want to go visit...mostly to see Tennessee Williams' house.

(That is how I justify a trip to the tropics. No, it's for research purposes! Really!)

Can you hold off until next week please Jester?

I have a cunning plan which involves winning £30 million on this weeks EuroLottery followed by moving to the Keys and spending all day on the beach witha book adn all night in the bars with Captain Morgan.

Oh Jester... I so would have moved to Key West about 7 years ago! In fact, I almost did... until the CG shipped my Coastie Ex to Alaska.

I hope you find a suitable roommate! I know thats a pain in the nuts.

Great plan....but you don't need me to hold off a week, as the room will not be available until October 1. I told you guys...this was a GOOD roommate, and as such he gave us a month's notice.

And Boggles, I would hope you would allow me to educate you as to the better rums. Captain Morgan? Amateur.

And 7 years ago was before the string of bad roommates started, and before I even had discovered this site (which was in a different incarnation when I did discover it, about 6 years ago).

Yeah, and from what I've heard the current owners are pretty hostile to tourists/researchers.

Whatevs, man. So many historical theatrical sights are in places with yucky weather (Drottningholm? Sweden? It's cold there!) that I'll take whatever excuse I can get to go to the tropics. That and I adore Williams.

I don't know if they are hostile, but I DO know that the house is not open to the public. It is a private residence.

That, however, should not deter TW fans, as we DO have the Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center at the local college. I am sure you can get your TW fix there.

And yeah...the weather does rock. No denying that!

Oh, how i love Key West. I'd move there in a blink if i could. The north-east is just so cold & sucky in the winter.

                              G'luck finding a roommate, Jester.
