  • Blackberry overload!

    Holy cow.

Over 9 pounds of blackberries harvested today. Off a trail not far from where I live. It was fun, walking down the paved trail, finding bushes/bramble and things to pick.
Even got to see a rabbit or two.

But - what do we do?

I've made a cobbler already, put almost 7 pounds away in the freezer. About 1 pound's in the fridge, ready for eating on cereal.

What all else to make? Pie, yeah. Syrup, yeah. Anyone got any cool recipes for Blackberry?

I have to go do that soon too. I want to try making my own blackberry vodka or brandy.

I jumped to that conclusion too. I live in RIM Town, so I never hear about blackberries in any other context.

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

Preserves! I wish I remembered my Grampa's recipe for preserves, but there has to be a way to make jam.... Check allrecipes.com and make some jam
Sometimes, it just doesn't pay to get out of the blanket nest.

Is it bad that several of us (me included) see the word blackberry and associate first to an electronic device?
How was I supposed to know someone was slipping you Birth Control in the food I've been making for you lately?

                    JELLY!
DH made about 40 cups of Dewberry jelly last month, and we have maybe 4 cups left.

We did give most of it away!

                      Definately Jams or Jellies.

Maybe some deserts too. Blackberry pancakes? Blackberry Shortcake? Or just eat them straight, with a sprinkle of sugar or spat of whipped cream if needed.

I'd suggest either a blackberry vodka or a blackberry liqueur (neutral grain spirits flavoured with blackberries, or sweetened and flavoured). Blackberry brandy (distilled from fermented blackberry juice) is probably a bit beyond most people's abilities. Jester can probably give you a bit more detail about the differences between the 3, or offer other suggestions.

Thanks for the info. I made Cherry Vodka earlier this summer. Also Rum and Brandy. it's more infusing than anything else. Infusing the alcohol with the fruit flavor and sweetness from sugar.

So I could do something as simple as purchase a cheap /medium vodka bottle, mash some berries into a pulp and drop the glop into the bottle?

                              Hmm.

I think I'll be making blackberry syrup sometime soon. These buggers are sweet, really! Except the bushes that bit my jeans, those weren't too sweet I still have scratches on my arms and legs from that day gathering all the berries.

I was thinking about taste mixes today, would pear be a good companion to blackberry? Like Pear and BB Juice? (I don't think pears are stiff/strong enough to be in pies and other cooked/baked items)

Would any kind of tea drink be OK with a sweet blackberry? Which ones? (I'm not a tea person, but I think I could try it with the BB's)
