  • OK, so Genius on iTunes is sort of weird...

So, I just bought a new CD, The Cab's "Whisper War" (Yes, I know I'm 36, but don't tell anyone. I really like it.)

I pulled up "Take My Hand" on the CD and told it to make me a Genius playlist. Well, some of the usual suspects popped up, I got Fall Out Boy, The All-American Rejects, My Chemical Romance, Good Charlotte, Paramore, and Bullet For My Valentine. Of course, Bowling for Soup, Shinedown, Seether and Finger Eleven sort of make me go "WTF?!?!?!", but it was when I got to the Avenged Sevenfold that I was completely confused. I mean, I could sort of understand "Afterlife", but "A Little Piece of Heaven" is the one that really confuses me.

For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, this is what I entered, and this is what I got. FAIR WARNING--the second one is NSFW!!!!

How the hell did that happen?

It's not terribly strange, is it? I mean, it's not like you bought a Kenny G album and got a Rammstein recommendation...not quite, anyway.

But yes, Genius sometimes has me shaking my head. Basically it's based on what other people who bought your music also bought. Often if I buy a song from a very popular artist (say, something by Kelly Clarkson), then I'll get some recommendations from another genre, like something by Kanye West. It's because both artists have songs on the Top 40 list, and some people just buy whatever's popular, across all genres.

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

Genius does entertain me at times. I was listening to Maximo Park the other day and one of the recommendations was Slayer. Very different as far as music goes, but I just shrugged my shoulders and go "I like Slayer. I agree with you, Genius!"
When will the fantasy end? When will the heaven begin?

Don't get me wrong, I really like both songs. Why it made me laugh was that it went from a cute little pop song to the most warped love song of all time. Seriously, that song is warped. I just found it amusing.
